Mike my 6" F15 was found unused in a box at mount wilson observator. It has a set of perfect Newton rings. I was told they had purchased it in 1962 and it was never used. John Pons made the 6" unitron tail piece adapter and wonderfull colimatible lens cell during the 90s. Then it was sold to Philo a local astronimer he had it siting in a box for years. Then John and I bought it back from him and finish the scope. It has 8 Spun aluminum baffles installed in its 7" aluminum powder coated tube. I had all the milled aluminum Black anodized. Used restored 7" very old Meade rings that John customized. The result of all this work it and OTA that produces F15 veiws that are as pleasing as my TAK 130 produces. A very nice telescope. Like John said Jaegers never made a bad lens!!
Look at the design of the cell and locking adjusters. The Cap on the dew shield strated life as a piece of 3/4" plate stock Aluminum.. Crazy HD,,

I have never really posted much about the way John made this thing.. Here is the original 1960s 6" unitron tail piece with a seven inch adapter. The super focuser has custom made Stainless steel knobs and a custom 2" threaded adapter for standard eyepices, John made these for the scope..
This is the most elaborate Jaegers telescope I have ever seen. I didnt think I was getting a scope like this when a agreed to build it. John just cant do anything half way. Before we even stared the build we installed the lens in Steve Millers GOTO and spent two nights testing the lens..LOL I guess John was trying to teach me patience!!

Clint.....Your a very fortunate man to have a person of the type of Pons as a friend and mentor. Remember that to some new kid you reach out to he will some day hold you to in such high esteem. What goes around comes around! Mike

All three of my Jaegers 6" lenses are from the early 60s, I was told. f/5, f/10, and the f/15 I'm currently working on!

Hey Rod,
Have you checked out their catalog? It's downloadable as a Word document. My favorite entry has to be this one on page 14:
-------------------------- …BRAND NEW AMERICAN MADE OPTICS AND MOUNTINGS… We have a large inventory of brand new war surplus achromatic unmounted eyepiece lens sets which were made to exacting government specifications. We have taken these brand new lens sets and mounted them in precision 1 ¼” outside diameter standard astronomical mounts. If these lenses had to be manufactured elsewhere, they would sell for three to four times more. All the eyepieces listed below are mounted. These cells are made of aluminum which is black anodized to eliminate glare. --------------------------
A large inventory of *brand new war surplus* achromatic lenses?? Wow!!

Steve Miller, Myself and a bunch of others will be there this year August 14th. Last year it caused quite a stir with all the old hands at Pinos. It is something to see!!!! Clint (aveman Whitman... It really would be a great artical to run.Lots of great stories and eqipment in one place. Thanks and let me know what I should do to make it happen!!!!

Thank you to all classic friends for your friendly support by the search to informations about Al Jaegers. The quality of his optics is excellent! I am aware what a jewel the lens of my cometseeker Jaegers 6 "F5 represents.

Rod....I wouldn't be a least bit surprized. They might have bought a *BLEEP* load of stuff over the years from the gov't. We'd be surprized what some of these astute business minds have squirreled away. Remember optics don't take up as much space as compared to some home based businesses. Mike

Hi Clint: I did that Newton ring test on the Sears 90mm Lens. I saw those Newton rings. If I looked at the lens from the side, I saw the rings go way out, they kept getting closer and closer together from the center out, and there was a bull's eye in the center. It reminded me of growth rings on a tree. I would estimate that there were a series of about 20 rings or so, but I don't know how to read them as to whether or not they indicated a good lens. I was up on the ladder holding it close to the light, but I kept thinking I'd probably drop the lens if I tried to get it too close. Anyway, they were obvious and could be easily seen. Does a coated lens show them up better? Thanks for the info. Rich

Hi Guys!
I'm the Steve Nightingale in that AMart thread---I'm glad there is an interest in Jaegers!!
Steve
ps: my first job there was to collate, staple, and put mailing addresses on the yellow covered catalogues---anyone have one from 1968?

"Like John said Jaegers never made a bad lens!!"
I helped Al test his 6 inch lenses and plenty of them were not so good---but he wouldn't ship them! If there was any doubt, he would have them re-worked until he was satisfied.

That's pretty cool. As a kid in the mid 70's I spent long hours drooling over the twin catalogs with stuff in them I could kind of dream about actually owning, A. Jaeger's and Edmunds Scientific. Of course, the slick Unitron catalog and the Cave one were great too, but when i'd saved up my pennies, the first two were the only ones I could afford.
Always lusted after one of the 6" achro's, and still do. I do have a question...what was up with the weird objective sizing? 3 1/8", 4 1/4" etc....are these conversions from metric something? Always wondered about the odd fractions tacked onto the end of many A Jaeger achro's.

I still have one that I ordered in 1971. It has a yellow cover. I also have a 3 1/4" f12 refractor with a Jeagers lens/cell and a Sky micro focuser. And yes I sat at the back of the class room with my Jaegers and Edmund catalogs, dreaming. My Jr high school had Astronomy and model rocketry classes, great fun. This is where I was exposed to Jaegers and Edmund. I was in 8th grade in 1971.

Steve,
Any idea who made the 3" and 4" objectives for Edmund?
I just wondered if you might know. Could it have been Jaegers? I always thought they came from Japan, Towa, Astro Optical or Seiko. But after seeing the markings and index's on the sides of Jaegers lenses, they look like they may have come from the same source.

Yes, Steve,...the yellow cover one...but just a few years past 1968, sorry. I had a scope that used the uncoated 83mm f/15 lens and truly regret parting with it some years back. I was thrilled when it showed Pi Aquila (1.4") clearly elongated and I also have a few views of Jupiter through it that are still etched in my memory. A really terrific smaller piece of glass (with a great Quaker Oats container dew shield). I've also viewed through two 5" f/5's and a 6" f/15 which were also very well figured. I just wish these lenses were still available at the catalogue prices back then.

Hi Steve,
in 1984 I bought my first Sky&Telescope magazine and I found there a ad from Jaegers. I was fascinated from Al Jaegers flagship ,a 6 Inch lens “mounted and coated”. At this time I owned a Unitron Model 142, and a 6 Inch lens seems to be right size for my next telescope. In 1987 at ITT, a star party in Carinthia, Austria, I meet the first time Albert Wacker, whose equipment was a 6”F5 RFT with a Jaegers lens. I was fascinated from the wide field views and how little of the secondary spectre was seen.
I looked for classifieds in Sky&Telescope, but staying in Germany I had no chance that one from U.S.A sold a Jaegers lens to me over the big pond. My friend Uwe´s sister married a Canadian guy and she lived a few years in USA. She bought 1993 from a classified in sky&telescope a 6Inch F5 Jaegers lens for Uwe, and a few years later, I was able to persuade him, to sell the lens to me. 10 years after my first look through a 6 Inch Jaegers I am happy to own finally a 6” Jaegers lens. 2 years later we bought also a 6"F8 lens, which belongs today to our local astronomy club. The favourite Instrument to look along the milky way is for me my Jaegers 6"F5.
Do you have a foto from Mr.Jaegers?
You see here my old friend Albert (now 81 years old) and his 6 InchF5 Jaegers RFT
