So is anyone familiar with the quality of the current Jaegers objectives? Their catalog still shows 6" objectives in various focal lengths, albeit a bit pricey. I suspect the current lenses are sourced from an off shore supplier, that is just my guess.
I would like to obtain a 6" f/10 objective (especially an older Jaegers) and finding one for sale is pretty rare. It would be good to know more about the optical quality of the current objectives before taking the plunge.

Well, that is a good point. Who wants to be the first one to place an order to see what happens? I think I'll defer...

Hey Caveman,
Thanks for the tip about the 6" f/15 D&G. Unfortunately an f/15 will not fit in the observatory.
D&G does not offer a 6" f/10. Anything longer - f/12, f/15, f/18, etc. - no problem. Seems like f/10 is the forgotten focal length. f/8 is easy to come by, same with f/12 and longer. But f/10? Forget it. If D&G offered a f/10 I would be all over that right now.
I'll just keep looking, an f/10 will show up someday.

Yeah and the minute it appears 99% of the time someone will beat you to it or snipe ya' at the last minute. You'd better just bite the bullet and call Albert Jr. He returns calls by the way. Mike

FYI, the Jaegers option may be a moot point. The link to their website has been down for a few days now and no replies to email. It doesn't look good.
Maybe the final end for A. Jaegers Optics?

Heck, why?: 10" folded Brandt
Wish I could afford that, but I'm pretty sure I can't! (even if I sold all THREE of my Jaegers 6"ers!).

Go right to the best source. His son A.Jaegers Jr. is still in business. I just received a catalog from him postmarked 12-3-2008. I have corresponded with him via snail mail and telephone. He will talk your ear off. Very nice guy.
He has a nice assortment of *new* classic parts including a focuser and tailpiece for a 6" refractor and a neat 7x50 finder.
I have a 1976 Six inch Cave Astrola refractor. Cave did not make refractor objectives but bought them from Jaegers.
The original Jaegers shop burned down in the 70's I believe. I think that was the end of their heyday. Write a letter and you may just be able to write his father's biography yourself. Bill SkyExplorers

It is official, Al Jaegers Jr. has decided to close the business. I exchanged email with him on 7-15 and to quote Al: "business has closed". I suspected something was up when their website had been shut down.
I guess it's not too surprising considering they weren't doing much marketing wise. It's really too bad, they produced some real fine achromat objectives over the years.

Hello Group ,
I found this thread interesting and a nice read . I would like to ask a question .
After reading here I did not read anything about where Mr. Jaegers lens were made . It seems he did not making them himself but had a contractor make them , which he tested and sold the ones that meet his standards . One person in the thread said he helped test the lens but did not return any information , unless I missed it . I remember the ads in S&T years ago that said they were made in the U.S.A. . So who was it ? Leonard

Just a comment on A Jaegers. As a teenager in the 60's I was never impressed with the A. Jaeger's ads. They had no glamor like the Unitron ads and I assumed their optical products muust be way inferior. Back in the day I never read any reviews of their lenses and I never knew until later that they were first class products. If you look at the old ads and prices it makes me sick that I didn't buy several 4 to 6 inch lenses back then. Too late now. Cheers, Bill

Hi Leonard,
I'm the one who Al invited "downstairs" to test the 6 inch lenses. As a teenager I worked on many projects (grinding small lenses, 8 inch mirrors, prisms, etc.) at the Lynbrook factory but never the 6 inchers.
My recollection, which could be incorrect, was that Al had two senior opticians entrusted to grinding and polishing the 6 inchers. I _believe_ they were done in house in the Lynbrook plant.
The mirrors were ground and polished in the Lynbrook plant, and sent out to somebody for figuring.

What a nice thread. Bonco, I too had that same impression regarding the Jaegers products back around 1970 when I too was only 15 years old. Those "war surplus" notations all over the catalog kinda struck me as cheap old optics. Sheesh, if I'd only knew too.

I too always thought that anything from Jaegers was war surplus and not of good quality. But in 1970 or 1971 I found a 6-inch f/15 objective for sale at a pawnshop and purchased it for $50. I eventually mounted it and placed it atop my old pipe mount (with a 3- or 4-ft. vertical extension pipe) and it performed beautifully. It was quite a sight to see that OTA mounted on a luggage rack atop my 1968 VW bug, which is how I transported it to the LAAS site in Lockwood Valley (at the foot of Mt. Pinos).
I only used it a few times before selling the OTA to a friend for $300. He used it a while as a guidescope for his 12-inch Newt. before selling it to someone else.
