Re: Asking about the Biography of A. Jaegers new [Re: Lew Chilton]

I too thought their ads were cheezy but I always associated war surplus stuff with high standards at bargain store prices. I jumped fast getting my 6" f/8 in 1973 along with all Jaegers parts to build a workable scope including their mount and pier. I still have the OTA and all associated optics.....32mm Erfle, 15mm Erfle, A.Jaegers 6mm Ortho, Barlow lens, star diagonal and an extra super focuser that has been modified onto my 8" Brandt. Mike

7x35 and 10x50 sears tower binocs, 3" f/10 edmunds reflector, 2.4" f/11.7 manon refractor, 6" f/8 jaegers refractor, "The 8 Ball" 8" f/13.3 brandt refractor, 3" f/15.8 sans&streiffe refractor, 3.1" f/15 selsi refractor(towa 339), 2.4" f/15 sears refractor, selsi 30x30mm spyglass, criterion 5-draw 25x45x75x spyglass(1957), 4.25" f/14.8 tasco 20te.

It's funny, "when I was a boy", we were afraid of achromats but collimated our Newtonians like would-be studs. The reality is, collimating a Newtonian is nearly impossible while collimating an achromat is very easy and nearly permanent!

OK, I have all these refractors, and I have no idea how to test them or even collimate a refractor lens. Other than taking them to a lab, is there a simple way to test one?? I'd like to test my Sears 90mm. I guess I should have paid more attention to the postings from before, because I remember seeing something about a flourescent light test, but I don't know if that is for a refractor lens , and one where you can check diffraction rings, but I'm pretty unsure what I need to do. Any suggestions guys? Thanks for any help, and happy 4th, Rich

Yes I remember this frame of mind exactly. Our state of practical knowledge was really low. A lot of it was based on advertising brochures we sent off for, knowing we couldn't afford whatever it was that inspired optical lust - like the 4" Unitron Photo-Equatorial. ($1074!!) Funny, my RV-6 was probably a much better OTA.

Just a comment on A Jaegers. As a teenager in the 60's I was never impressed with the A. Jaeger's ads. They had no glamor like the Unitron ads and I assumed their optical products muust be way inferior. Back in the day I never read any reviews of their lenses and I never knew until later that they were first class products. If you look at the old ads and prices it makes me sick that I didn't buy several 4 to 6 inch lenses back then. Too late now.
Cheers, Bill

Thank you very much to all for your answers,
I will keep my Jaegers lens ,a 6"F5 with honor.
It is a good companion to my Zeiss AS 130/1950

Gerd it is ashamed you guys over there have to set up in such unclean and cluttered surroundings! Do you have to worry about those roving bands of singing school kids and nuns mucking up the place??

Clint,
As in the "Sound of Music"? (Doe, a deer a female deer; ray, a drop of golden sun; me, a name I call myself; fa, a long, long way to run...)

Oops...getting off topic.

If it only goes uphill, you need no bullseye,
but we try to do it better.
