I set up the PST this AM but the clouds wouldn't go away. I could see the Sun through the clouds but they were too thick to allow me to see the active region. Finally this afternoon they thinned enough for me to see something (for about 5 minutes).

I was still looking through clouds but the AR is bright! I checked the GOES plot and it was creeping up at the time of my observation but has since leveled off. Visually, the AR appeared as a big checkmark almost on the central meridian with the large sunspot at the end of the long arm of the check. It leads the rest of the sunspot group.

The big spot is prominent in Ha, but the little spots were only really visible when I detuned the PST towards the WL side. I was looking at 27x, 33x, and 40x. I would estimate that the big spot was about the same diameter as Earth. I did not detect the split in it.

Thanks--nice to have fireworks supplied by the Sun. Looks like it will rain all day here--glad it's a big world. I'll be following the AR virtually thanks to folks in sunnier climes.
