It is a generalized thread, open to tips on any of the scopes included in this forum. It turns out the fix was easy, but not obvious. I removed the scope's face plate (where the cables plug into the scope--NOT THE CORRECTOR PLATE ON THE OTA) and noticed a 3 volt lithium mounted on the back side of the circuit board. It turns out the lithium battery was nearly dead. after replacing the battery and putting everything back together, everything works! The nearly dead lithium battery was the problem. To get access to the battery is a minor hassle, but not too bad. several connectors need to be disconnected.
