Galilean Nights
      #3219731 - 07/15/09 04:06 PM

Galilean Nights
Following the unprecedented success of IYA2009's 100 Hours of Astronomy, which featured hugely popular projects such as a Global Star Party, the live 24-hour webcast "Around the World in 80 Telescopes", a Science Centre webcast, and Sun Day, another weekend of astronomy events has been highlighted for 23-24 October 2009. This new IYA2009 Cornerstone Project is called Galilean Nights and will see amateur and professional astronomers around the globe taking to the streets, pointing their telescopes to the wonders that Galileo observed 400 years ago.

The project's focus is sidewalk observations of gas giant Jupiter and its moons and members of the public will as also be able to observe the Sun, our own Moon and many more celestial marvels with the own eyes, much like Galileo did 400 years ago.

Please post all of the details and news you hear about here on this form!

Galilean Nights update and logo translation

Thank you to everybody who has sent in translated text to create the
Galilean Nights logo in a variety of languages. A few logos are still
being produced, but the first set of translated logos are now available
to download, to help you to promote your local events and to create your
own resources. They can be downloaded from the IYA2009 Galilean Nights
page: http://www.astronomy2009.org/globalprojects/cornerstones/galilean

Work on the Galilean Nights website is in planning and we aim for it to
be online by the end of August. Many thanks again for the work you have
done so far, please continue to encourage local groups, science centres,
schools etc. to hold astronomy events for Galilean Nights and if you
require any help or have any queries or comments, then please don't
hesitate to get in touch.

Best wishes,

Catherine

Don't Forget a Galileoscope would be perfect for all events, especially this one! They are great for giving away, showing Jupiter and even mimicking Galileos Observations!

Order now! https://www.galileoscope.org/gs/

As far as we all know there will not be a webcast for Galilean Nights, like there was for the 100 Hours of Astronomy. Since this would take a lot of work for the Galilean Nights team to do in such a short time. Why don't we, the event organizers/planners/helpers create a webcast?

After a wonderful time webcasting during the 100HA I just had to do it again! SO i started to broadcast our monthly club meetings, outreach events and more. But eventually I wanted to do more, So I broadcasted Celestial objects through my telescope LIVE! Now after doing this for a few months, I think I should put these all together and create one of the best webcasts ever! But, during the 100HA webcast the thing that made mine so special was the connection we had with another webcast, the 100HA in the Netherlands. What happened is me and the other man teamed up a few nights before and agreed to broadcast together on Ustream, answering questions for the other, letting the public talk to them, etc.

So I would like to start gathering people from around the world to commit to broadcast their Galilean Nights Event! Its really easy, you can just place a webcam, and computer with internet in the corner of your events area, or you can go all out and broadcast not just to show your event but interact with the online group, just like we did! Or anywhere between just please come and commit to broadcasting for the Galilean Nights, and lets make this event just as good if not better then the 100 Hours of Astronomy!

If you would like to broadcast your event please reply in this thread or contact me:

Thanks and please do consider broadcasting your event!

Astrophotography Competition

The stunning images of distant objects in the Universe are well know around the world and do more to bring astronomy to the wider public and to inspire future astronomers than words ever could. Run in partnership with Europlanet, the Galilean Nights competition encourages anybody with enthusiasm for astronomy to try a different approach to their observations. Don't just look at the skies, take a photograph of what you see! Enter the Galilean Nights Astrophotography Competition and have your image inspire others.

The Galilean Nights astrophotography competition consists of two categories, "Earth and Sky" and "Beyond Earth" and is open for entries from 17 September 2009 until 27 October 2009.

Enter the competition now at www.flickr.com/groups/galileannights

How to enter

For the competition, Galilean Nights has chosen to use one of the most popular and easy to use photo sharing websites, Flickr. Entering the competition is a straight forward process: sign up to Flickr and become a member of the Galilean Nights group (www.flickr.com/groups/galileannights); upload your photograph with the correct tags and then simply add it to the group. Easy!

When entering the competition remember the following points:

1. Tag your photos correctly. To enter the Earth and Sky category, your photo must have the tags: "competition" and "earthandsky". To enter the Beyond Earth category, your photo must have the tags: "competition" and "beyondearth".

2. Photographs must be taken between 17 September 2009 and 27 October 2009 and must be submitted to the group by the end of 27 October 2009.

3. For the purposes of the competition, Galilean Objects are taken to be:
The Sun; Venus; The Moon, Jupiter, Saturn; The Milky Way; The Pleiades (Messier object 45); The Beehive Cluster (Messier object 44) and The Orion Nebula (Messier object 42).

4. You should submit no more than three (3) photos to each category.

5. If your photograph is shortlisted, you will be contacted the week commencing Monday 30 November. You will be asked for a high resolution photo (ideally 6 megapixels, but at least 1200 pixels along the shortest side, 300dpi) some details about yourself and your photograph and you will have one (1) week to respond.

6. By submitting your photograph to the competition, you are agreeing to the competition rules.
