Greetings,
Does anyone know of a good geared tripod head that would hold the Questar 3-1/2 astro. steady and allow for fine alignment adjustments?
Right now I'm using a Manfrotto 3029. It is steady enough, but difficult to use to make fine adjustments, as it is not geared. A few years ago, I saw some nice Gitzo heads, but the construction made them less than rock solid with the Q. Maybe things have changed.
I suppose I could make fine adjustments by fiddling with . . . er, I mean, adjusting . . . the leg extensions on the tripod, but . . . if anyone knows of good steady geared tripod head, please share.
Thanks,
Brent

I use a Manfrotto 405 (gears on all 3 axes) on a heavy Gitzo tripod. This setup is certainly sturdy enough for the Q3.5 ... but is still touchy/sensitive for polar alignment. Good luck. Jim

Thanks Jim,
I'll give these a look next time I'm in a store that carries them. (They look good on the web.)

Hi Brent,
I use the Tiffen V2 vernier head with a (davis and sanford) tripod... The V2 head is very substantial and precise polar alignment is a 2-3 second evolution. The head attaches to 1 7/8th center post via a locking knob. Thanks,
Matt
