Messier 23
      #3238784 - 07/26/09 02:14 AM Attachment (48 downloads)

This is a digital image done in GIMP based on a sketch completed at the scope on July 21st, 2009, beginning at 11:40p.m using my XT10 and a 21mm Stratus at 57x.

When I first examined this I really questioned whether I wanted to sketch this open cluster. I decided to try and tackle it and just sketch what I could see. I had done M25 and several other sketches of other open clusters lately since I think they are often ignored this time of the year. I've been recording my observations on a digital recorder and uploading them to iTunes and am going to add a new dimension to my blog/coming Web Page. I am going to post up my audio observations of the items I am sketching. For me I find by keeping a written record and an audio one it helps me to remember what I am seeing as I am seeing it and I can return to listen to the observation again while I re-create it digitally.

The cluster is 2150 ly away from us and is estimated at 27 arc seconds across or 15 to 20 ly across. It is a rich cluster and between 129 to 147 members have been counted depending on which observation you go by. Finally it is estimated at 220 million to 300 million years old.

Jay,

An excellent observation of M23. You have done a nice job recording the open cluster using Gimp. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Hi Jay,

Sketch of M23 looks real goooooooood buddy. The strings of stars here look very familiar. I think you nailed it beautifully.

Frank
