Observing Note
Two evenings ago I observed Atlas and Hercules. A sketch progressed as far as white outlines before clouds overtook the sky. Tonight I had 20 minutes of sketching before heavy haze and approaching thunderstorms erased the crater images. I had a few minutes to capture a binocular view before thickening clouds erased that view as well. A few minutes ago I went out to see the sky was pitch black – clouds so thick that local light pollution could not penetrate it. Nevertheless, the summer sounds of insects and frogs were loud; lightning was being reflected off the clouds; the air was thick with moisture and deadly still. If I did not know better, the final scene would suggest that no heavens existed and the moon was only a figment of imagination.
The Lesson
A man had brought his son to see if Jesus could do anything. His son was not just having fits, they were fits driven by an evil presence—one that sought to kill the boy. Since childhood the parents had stepped in to save too many situations where their son would have died in fire or water. The disciples were unable to help. Jesus told him that anything was possible for someone who believed (in Him). At that statement, the father cried out: I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief. Like the moon and heavens hidden by clouds to suggest they are not there yet they are, the father believed but the stark situation in his son was contrary to that believe that Jesus could help. Jesus healed the boy immediately. (Mark 9:14-27)

Pastels: white, grey, black for the 114x view of craters; white, yellow, black for the binocular view

Very cool sketch and narrative, summertime is observing time in the midwest, the other seasons are cold windy and cloudy.

Yes, I have watched Frank tell me how cold it gets some of those nights. If we did not observe from a semi-heated sky shed with astro video in the middle of winter, I am not sure we would do much observing/sketching.

PS: One those cold winter nights if you didn't have a semi-heated shelter you would go out and sketch I just know it.

Thanks everyone for the comments. ...and Frank, you are probably right, but I still remember the last time I came in with frozen fingers, cramps in my hand, and tears from the cold when I tried to sketch in the teens. It takes being a little crazy to do it, but I have been accused of worse.

Thanks Jim. The nice thing about the moon is that it sets up some very beautiful views when clouds or other weather events "disturb" the view. When it happens, I try to grab it.

Roland,
An excellent observation of Atlas and Hercules. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
As Atlas held up the world and Hercules performed his labors the Bible passage quoted tells us all that believing in Christ can save us all.
