Impact Site Photo Timeline new
      #3244806 - 07/29/09 01:04 PM

This thread is an attempt to assemble a series of images that show the progression of the "Wesley Impact" scar on Jupiter.

The discoverer of the impact, Anthony Wesley (Bird), has asked that we submit our images to the Planetary Virtual Observatory and Laboratory website so that they are easily accessible to the science community. It seems to me that (to use an old saying that really doesn't affect Anthony or his family's safety at all) we can kill two birds with one stone here. I'm going to try and structure how we do this timeline thread so that PVOL gets its images and so do we. Hopefully in this way everyone who wants to contribute will make the extra effort to contribute to the scientific effort.

So, if you would like to contribute images to the timeline collection please use the following instructions to submit your entry:

  • First, drop by the PVOL website, get yourself signed on and have a look at the requirements for submission to the database. Pay particular attention to the file naming convention required. If you have any questions at all about this then just drop a line here and we will get them answered for you.
  • Next, submit your image to the database. If you have any problems with this and you can't resolve the problem on the site then come back here and let us know and we'll see if we can't get it resolved for you.
  • Then, find your submission in the database - it will probably be very close to the top of the list. Right click on the link provided on the right hand side of the listing and select "copy shortcut" (or whatever your browser says you need to do to copy the link).
  • Finally, PM the link you copied from the PVOL site to me here at CN. I will gather up the images and assemble and edit the timeline thread here on CN based on your submissions. If you have a large version I will provide a link to the large version that can be accessed by clicking the viewable image in the timeline thread.

That's about it - I'll maintain the timeline thread as images arrive. It will be locked to general access so others cannot post.

Some Tips: Please try to get the time of your image as correct as possible. Check out this website for a very easy to use time zone converter. Also check out the PVOL website for a very handy Julian date and Central Meridians calculator

Now let's get cracking!

Charlie
