Jupiter Aug 2
      #3251743 - 08/02/09 04:15 AM Attachment (100 downloads)

Had some great seeing this morning and also got to try out a new telescope. The sketch was made using a 3.5" refractor and Wratten 56. When the sketch was done I thought I had a 5mm eyepiece in the focuser. It turned out to be a 4 mm generating 227x. Additionally, the observation was done straight through as I don't have a 1.25" diagonal to fit its focuser.

A neighbor cruised by later and he got to see the impact site and a shadow transit.

I used a 2H pencil for most of the sketch. Minimal use of a HB for the darkest tone on the southern boundary of the SEB.

Great sketch Sol. Great seeing is always a + . You pulled a lot of nice detail out of it. A new telescope usally means clouds(ha). Cler skies

Thanks.

Its the current Orion 90mm scope special. $97 & change with accessories, (2 eps, rings/dovetail, and a 6x30 finder), shipped to my door. Star test was very good with green filter and collimation was excellent.

Also NNeb had some bites out of it. Most notably the one that sort of lined up with the GRS. Seeing was excellent this morning but transparency was a somewhat milky. The humidity was down to a really comfortable level.

I was really hoping to get out again before I have to do traveling, but alas right now raining in sheets.....again. I guess I'm just happy to have seen the impact site and Jupiter only twice so far this whole summer.

Nice work, Sol. Very good rendering of the GRS area and the turbulent NEB. That seems like a very good telescope for the money.

Thanks.

Always a pleasure to see all the work presented here as well.

I've been traveling so much lately with two more trips to go. After that I hope to get back into using my telescopes more often and participating more here.

Thanks again!

Sol,

An excellent observation of Jupiter using your new refractor. You have rendered much detail across the planet, but especially the NEB and SEB (with Great Red Spot (GRS)). This proves that a quality small instrument can show a good amount of detail over the Moon and planets (as well as DSO's). Thank you for sharing it with us all.

I am trying to get another look at the impact site myself.

Carlos

I always like your Jupiter/Saturn work. Your sketches keep reminding me that I really have to work more on these subjects, especially since they are so popular in group settings....and we want them to sketch them. Roland

Thanks Roland.

I guess other alluring factors are that one does not need a dark site, features are always changing - apparition to apparition, night to night and even every couple of hours.

Best,
