As the moon approaches full phase the sun will eventually rise on the well known triple crater group: Phocylides, Nasmyth and Wargentin. The 117 kilometer diameter walled plain crater known as Phocylides is situated south southwest of the more famous impact remnant known as Schickard (233 km.). At the time of my observation and sketch the terminator was crossing over Phocylides and presenting an impressive view for an attempt at a quick sketch. This ancient formation (Nectarian) was just beginning to catch sunlight on its inner western wall. The crater looked much larger than usual because hidden in that darkness is also crater Nasmyth (80 km.), its far western wall also illuminated but not its floor, central peak or common wall with Phocylides. When at higher sun it is easy to tell that Nasmyth is the older crater since the wall of Phocylides intrudes into Nasmyth at their common divide. There is a third member to this group and it is an interesting crater with lava filling it to the brim. It is crater Wargentin (87 km.) but unfortunately it remained hidden during the entire observation.
Sketching:
For this sketch I used: white sketching paper 12”x 10”, HB, 4B, 6B graphite pencils, a blending stump. After scanning, Brightness was decreased (-2) and contrast increased (+2) using Microsoft Office Picture Manager.
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian and 6 mm eyepiece 241x
Date: 8-3-2009, 3:00 - 4:00 UT
Temperature: 22° C (72° F)
clear, breezy, 70% humidity
Seeing: Antoniadi III
Colongitude 56.4°
Lunation 12 days
Illumination 93 %

Frank,
I was waiting for a post with a sketch from your hand.
It's amazing how you transform the white sketching paper into a sunlit moonscape. Wonderful work.

Rony,
Thank you very much. I get a little antsy when I can't get out and try to sketch for a week or more.

Frank, a superb pencil sketch and observation report of Phocylides and Nasmyth! This area is a challenge to sketch because besides being highly foreshortened by it's position closer to the southern limb, the lighting can really be confusing sometimes. It might have something to do with Wargentin, it's such an odd full saucer. You've done an outstanding job with this one!

Rich,
Thank you very much for those kind words. I was lucky to get this one in as clouds moved in and prevented any Jupiter observing and sketching for me. An upside to the location of these craters for sketching them on the terminator is that the terminator moves more slowly at these latitudes. Frank

Nice pencil sketch, Frank. I always like to see those places deep in the terminator get lit up by the rising sun. I'm glad you could get this one done before the clouds came in. I hear you about getting antsy if you haven't sketched for a while--I'll bet several people share that feeling.

Roland and Michael,
Thank you both for your kind words. Yes everyone that posts here gets antsy when it is cloudy and they can't sketch. It's even worse when it's clear and you can't sketch.

Shannon,
Thank you much. Fighting with the weather - I think that is to give us time to pause and plan or next sketch. But you know.... I'm with you when the weather is bad.

T5,
Yes indeed, and even when it is full you have rays and bright crater rims. It just never stops.... unless it's cloudy. UGH! Thank you Tommy
