Just got the scope.....now what else do I need? new
      #3253880 - 08/04/09 05:04 PM

Well we just bought our scope (ETX-125) and we're wondering what are the items you all would suggest getting first?

We want to get a green laser pointer (not to attach to the scope) to help us point out things to our kids. And we need to get some red flashlights as the ones we used to have when we did this years ago no longer have the red caps on the ends. We were hoping the scope would fit in our pelican case, but I can't find exact dimensions of the scope or the interior dimensions of the Meade case. So, we may be buying one of those too. We have a field guide and will get some star charts for the kiddos. Would we need the dew shield in NM?

What are the most used filters? We'll be getting a 20mm and a 15mm eyepiece with the scope we're buying for our kids, so we'll use those to start out with.

I'm sure there's plenty of things that we're not thinking of but you wonderful experts can fill me in on!

Thanks!

Being an ETX owner myself, i would suggest you look at getting some sort of 12v battery supply. Also, if the flashlights you have are not ever to be used for white light, then a red permanant pen does the job quite nicely.

Although i am a relative beginner myself, someone said to me the most important thing is to use the scope! They also said dont get wrapped up in buying loads of bits and bobs. Use the scope and then work out what accessories are best suited to you.

Hope this helps in a small way. Enjoy your scople

You need an outside 12volt power pack, and a dew shield.

Don't get me wrong....we're having our share of wet weather currently. But, would I really need a dew shield normally in New Mexico? It's so dry here normally. Last time we had a scope we lived in Hawaii....so big difference in viewing climates.

I've read several threads that talk about the 12v power packs. Why is it that you don't recommend the internal batteries? Is it something we need right away, or something we can wait a bit for?

Need? An eyeball and cooperative weather. Beyond that, it's all negotiable.

A fresh set of 8 AA cells will last approximately 16-20 hours of accumulated use. Rechargeable cells are a little problematic in scopes because they actually run at a slightly lower voltage (around 1.2-1.3 volts vs. 1.5 for a non-rechargeable cell.) The cumulative drop in voltage can actually be between 1.6 to 2.4 volts in a freshly recharged set! This can (and likely will) result in tracking errors and eventual "motor errors" in the AutoStar GoTo drives. So to get back to what Aidi and Joe have said, if you're going to be using this for any extended period of time away from access to household current, then an external power supply is worth the investment. No, you don't need it right away. But with the cost of 8 AA cells being around $6 conservatively, if you observe with any regularity you'll be chewing through 1-2 packs of batteries per week.

If you're going to be setting up around the house and within reach of an AC outlet, then you might look into an AC adapter to power the scope. I got mine on e-bay, and opted for the one that featured the separate "cigarette lighter" adapter on one end. This serves two purposes; first, I can operate the AC adapter while in or near my house. If I do go out away from an outlet, I can plug the scope into a power supply or (although I'm loathe to do so) into a car lighter. Click this link for an example of the one I bought.

Now, do you need a dewshield. Dew is moisture condensation that occurs when an object is moved from a relatively cooler environment to a relatively warm environment. Think of when you take a can or bottle of cold soda/beer from the fridge what happens to it. The outside of the container will soon start to "sweat" from condensation. Even in low moisture climates, you will have a "dewpoint" that is derived from the ambient temperature modified by the relative humidity. It may be less of a problem where you are, but not an altogether negligible one. The best judge of this will be experience. Take the scope out for a few nights and check the corrector plate after you've been outside for a while. If it appears to be fogging or if there's actual moisture pooling on the bottom of the element, then you know you'll need a shield. In some instances, folks even need dew strips, which are bands that wrap around the body of your scope and have an electrical current passed through them to heat them up. So long as the temperature stays above the dewpoint, it won't allow the optics to dew or fog up. This latter option can be pricey, but in some areas of the world, it's as necessary as an eyepiece.

Best choices for "safe" lights are the new red LED devices, particularly those that have a dimmer control on them. This comes in handy not only for preserving your dark adaptation eyesight but for those around you as well.

One inexpensive item I picked up (also from e-bay) was a "flexi-focus" cable. This attaches a short (8" or so) cable from your focus knob. It allows you to focus your 125 without the focus "jitters" that can happen when you focus manually. Because of the long focal length and high magnification of this scope, small "bumps" and movements are amplified correspondingly, and it takes a couple seconds for these to dampen out. The cable focus helps lessen the effect that focusing has on shaking the scope. If you're really brave and money is no object, you can look into electronic focusers but unless you really have a need for such a thing, it's a waste of a couple hundred bucks IMO. I think the flexi-focus cable ran me around $8-10. That's more my speed!

None of these items are crucial to running your scope. They are intended to make your life a bit easier in the long run, and folks who have had their scopes for a while have found them to be worth their while to add to their collection.

Keep us posted on when the new scope arrives. Looking forward to your first light report!

I'm glad you chose the ETX, and I look forward to hearing how you like it. You got a good price on it.

As for batteries, you might look into the 12 volt power plug and a power pack. I personally think it's smarter to get a 12 volt deep cycle, and a battery box and build your own if you own a good battery charger allready. You can put a pair of 12 volt plugs on it and have all the juice you need to run the dew heater and scope. My experience is running cables connected to the scope in the dark can be fatal to the scope, it's best to confine everything below the tripod, so I hope you keep this in mind. I'd hate to attend a funeral for a 125.

Here is a suggestion for a case.....The Craftsman Sit/Stand/Tote Truck (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00959627000P?keyword=59627). Your kids can even stand on it.

I bought 2 packages of 3x22x22 Poly foam at our local Hobby Lobby (regular price $5.99 each, but was on sale for 40% off).

I did put 2 pieces on the bottom for 6" of padding. Foam cuts easily with an electric knife.

I think I will cram a bit more foam on both sides of piece E2.

Here are some pictures:

The dew shield will increase contrast by blocking out any light that might enter from the SIDE of the tube. That's why you should buy one.

Thanks everyone! And thanks for those pics! We definitely like the idea of tool box type case, but would like something a bit larger so we can utilize the shelf inserts too. Or we may consider a duffle style soft case that we could pad and would offer pockets for other storage.

We're going to order one of the flexible dew shields.....I wasn't thinking about it shielding from light, that makes perfect sense. I think we've decided on the Celestron PowerTank too.

I appreciate all of the help!!

A good book like NightWatch or Turn Left at Orion will lead you to some of the better things to see by Season. Both are available on Amazon.com.

Get familiar with Mike Weasner's Mighty ETX site. There is a ton of information in there.

Enjoy the nights.

I ordered a dew shield, the power cord Treetopper suggested and a prizm ($50) for land viewing in the Smokey Mountains. My Sister has a cabin their on the side of Hatchers Mountain and you can see for miles so it should be worth it. I go up their about 4 times a year. Wears Valley, Tn.

In New Mexico (at least the desert area) the only reason to get a dew shield is to block out stray reflections! I have lived in Deming for 9 months and never had any dew on my scope and only one time on the ground!

Perhaps I need to emigrate....

But I find dew forms on the scope long before the ground gets damp. If you have a dry climate you may well get away with just a dewcap ... but all a dewcap does for me is to delay dewing over of the corrector plate by a few minutes; I need a heater tape as well.

As you point out, a "glare shield" is worth having even if you are lucky enough not to have a dewing problem.

I've never had a problem with dew in Colorado and New Mexico tends to be drier than here. While it's not out of the question that you could be bothered by dew, it's unlikely enough that it's not worth bothering with a dew shield unless you find you are having a problem.

BTW, I have an ETX90 so pretty much the same physical scope configuration as your 125.

If, however, you're in a poor area as far as light pollution, you may find that (as others have mentioned) the dew shield helps with stray light. It's easy enough (and costs nothing) to test this with a piece of cardboard blackened on one side, and a stout rubber band.
