Autostar flash update new
      #3246421 - 07/30/09 10:18 AM

My Autostar #497 reports at bootup with 43E. Someone said that there is a newer version out there......can I update it? If so how simple is this to do and do I have to be connected to the internet and the telescope at the same time? I have the Meade #505 cable (serial version).

Thanks

You can update it--

1. Your computer must have a serial port-- or you must buy a serial to USB converter cable. Keyspan makes a good one.

2. You must install the Autostar Updater software-- a brand new version is available about half way down this page-
http://www.meade.com/support/auto.html version 5.6

3. Install the regular Autostar Suite before you install the updater located here: http://www.meade.com/support/auto.html version 5.5

When you install the updater version 5.6 it will also update the Suite version 5.5 if it is already installed.

Always plug the cable into the bottom of the 497 controller and NEVER into the base of the telescope. Make sure the scope is turned OFF whenever you plug in or before you remove the cable after you update the 497.

Pretty simple deal-- go get a cup of coffee -- takes 10-15 minutes to update once it starts.

The NEW Updater recognizes the old 497 and the new 497 and applies the correct firmware. 43Eg is the latest version for the OLD 497 hand controller.

I'm going to give it a try tonight. I stand to lose nothing but everything doing it. I'm going to log the laptop online, start the scope, and launch the software and go from there. Once I do it once I will get over my fear.

I flash things all the time, everything from network switches, to BIOS's, telephone BCM's, anything that needs firmware, so I'm not too fearful. Worst case I'll have to send the handset back to meade LOL.

Let you know how I make out in a couple of hours.

Hooked everything up as you said and connected to the internet. As soon as I got online smoke started pouring out of the RA housing. I sure hope that was part of the flash process.

No seriously, went online, got the latest version of ASU (ver 5.8) and it reported that my controller allready had 43Eg in it, so no need to update it. I did a reset on it because next time out I am going to calibrate the motors anyways so just getting ready. Now that my mount is broke in, it's time to do that and really get my GoTo's spot on.

Thanks for all your help.
