Crater Langrenus before Sunset new
      #3263005 - 08/09/09 12:59 PM Attachment (18 downloads)

One night past the August full moon I had the opportunity to observe the craters near the moon’s eastern limb. One of these craters, the one I selected for sketching, was the walled-plain crater Langrenus. With the terminator a couple of hundred kilometers away the beautiful ray system was still easily seen crossing Mare Fecunditatis to the west. Crater Langrenus is approximately 132 kilometers in diameter and dates from the Eratosthenian period. Its walls stand several kilometers tall and it has a nice pair of central mountain peaks rising more than a kilometer above the floor. The northern portion of the floor is heavily boulder covered but in the current lighting that was difficult to see clearly. Beyond the crater to the northwest the triplet craters of Naonobu, Bilharz and Atwood were nicely visible and a central swelling could be seen on the floor of each.

Sketching:

For this sketch I used: black Strathmore 400 Artagain paper, white and black Conte’
pastel pencils and a hard blending stump.
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian with 6mm (241x) and 4 mm (362x) eyepieces
Date: 8-8-2009 6:50-8:15 UT
Temperature: 22°C (72°F)
Partly cloudy, calm
Seeing: Antoniadi III,
Co longitude 107.3°
Lunation 16 days
Illumination 98.5%
Libration in Longitude -3.5°
Oak Forest, Illinois

Frank,

That is a terrific job. Langrenu and its rays remind me of the Hands of Saruman from LOTR. Your capture of the rays is nicely done.

Frank my friend, it just doesn't get better than this! I am in awe of the accuracy, characteristics and the number of craters you rendered so beautifully in this sketch. This is a tough area to sketch because of the sheer number of medium sized craters, so it must have been a challenge to stay focused on each one dutifully recording the variety of types, from simple bowls to complex ringed plain. Breathtaking Frank, totally breathtaking!

Shannon, Jay and Rich:

Thank you all very much.

Shannon, This sketch was scanned and using my scanner I made slight adjustments to the brightness -2 and contrast +2.
---

Jay, My hair is turning gray but I'm not magical like Saruman.

----

Rich, Old friend, I believe I'm starting to get the hang of this white on black sketching. I actually skipped a lot of craters on purpose because the last time I tried to include too many it became like plotting each star in a globular cluster. That can take the wind out of your sails.

Frank,

An excellent observation of Langrenus. You have recorded the walls and surrounding terrain very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Frank,

actually I think your sketches are magical. I really like your crescent Venus in the Daytime I just saw in the gallery below. Earendil from Tolkien's Silmarillion would be proud.

Carlos and Jay,

Thank you both for the kind words about my sketch.
I look forward to seeing all the fine sketches the two of you and others post here on a regular basis.
---
Jay, Thanks for the comment about my Venus sketch. When the humidity drops I'll take a look at the daytime Venus which will be showing a gibbous phase now. Earendil would find it strange I'm a bit chicken to get into a ship on the high seas.

Rony,

Thank you for your nice words. I really enjoy sketching the moon. It presents a wealth of targets nearly every clear night.

Nice sketch and a good choice, too. It is a remarkable crater to sketch.
