Anyone see M100 detail through an 8" new
      #3271171 - 08/13/09 08:39 PM

My last deepsky view thru my 8" was of M100 - I could see the tantelizing motteling at times like details were just beyond grasp.

Anyone see arms or structure here in an 8" besides the gentle rise in brightness to the nucleus? I feel like a better site would give me a dustlane perhaps.

Pete

I believe if your sky is dark enough and you are well dark adapted then yes, you would be able to see structure in M100 with an 8" scope.

What I generally saw in my old 8 inch f/7 was a roughly circular hazy spot with a small brighter core region and some mottling in the outer haze. At times using moderate power (100x), I could catch glimpses of the arc-like segments of the arms, but overall, it didn't come out as an overall spiral form quite as well as M51 does. Clear skies to you.

This galaxy never showed much detail to me except the steady brightening towards the nucleus and patchiness in it's oval disk. I can't say for sure if I've seen spiral arms or not, but I have yet to look at it under a very dark sky. Seen it many times from the light polluted skies outside of my city, and it's bright enough to look good even in a 6-inch from a less than perfect site.

In my old 10 inch, M100 showed a central bar with spiral arms unwinding from the core. My notes and sketch indicate the spiral structue was fairly obvious so, from a dark and transparent site, I would expect some indication of spiral structure to be visible.

The best i've ever done (8"SCT) is avertedly detecting a bit of momentary mottling away from the center. The steady brightening towards the nucleus which Taras mentioned is always there.

Thanks everyone!!! The skys werent pristine nor was the elevation anything to write home about, but that was the spot through the trees that I had!! I like this one though.
Definately worht returns. Up in northwestern CT there are some surprisingly good dark sky areas. Ill try again then.
