I was looking at TR 37 in the nebula ic 1396. I didn't see the nebulosity and tried my O3 filter on it as well. Is there a filter to bring out this particular type nebula?

(The moon was above the horizon)

Yup, that one is tough mainly because of its size. In my 100mm f/6 refractor, it shows up as a dim diffuse glow superimposed on the central star cluster with only hints of irregularity (using the DGM Optics NPB filter). With the OIII, the nebula gets smaller and a little sharper, but if I really want to see detail in it, I have go to with a much larger aperture. In my 9.25 inch SCT, I had to pan around quite a bit (59x, 1 degree true field of view, DGM NPB filter), but despite the nebula's faintness, I was able to trace several irregular dark spots and lanes in the interior. Most notable is the wide wedge-like inclusion into the north end of the nebula, ending in a more definite dark spot (Barnard 161). Clear skies to you.
