Almost a Tycho Crater Sketch
      #3274512 - 08/15/09 04:44 PM Attachment (15 downloads)

Almost a Tycho Crater Sketch

I was about 45 minutes into this sketch when I began thinking about the last time I started a close up sketch of the crater Tycho. I was stopped shortly into that attempt by fast approaching clouds. This time I was not concerned because satellite images and the Clear Sky Chart for my area revealed little or no chance of that and suddenly as if on command the clouds rolled in from the east and sketching was over.
So I share with you my second attempt at a Tycho crater sketch. What is it they say about the third time?

Sketching:

For this partial sketch I used: black Strathmore 400 Artagain paper 9" x 12", white and black Conte’
pastel pencils, gum eraser and blending stumps.
Telescope: 10 inch f/ 5.7 Dobsonian with 6mm (241x) eyepiece.
Date: 8-13-2009 9:30-10:15 UT
Temperature: 20°C (68°F)
Clear and then cloudy, calm
Seeing: Antoniadi III,
Co longitude 107.3°
Lunation 22 days
Illumination 54.5%

I'd say the second times a charm too Frank! I can see Tycho beautifully rendered in what you already accomplished before the weather closed in. To me, there is something very special about this unfinished sketch. The look of the nearly finished crater against the outlines surrounding it gives us an wonderful insight into what you were thinking and noting as the sketch progressed. This is sketching in the raw state, very powerful and very helpful for others studying how you develop your sketch. Very impressive sketch Frank!

Rich,

Thank you. You are certainly a glass half filled kind of guy my friend and you are probably correct in your assessment but I did begin to laugh to myself when the view at the eyepiece suddenly vanished. I was working at a slow pace because I knew for "certain" clouds would NOT appear. I could have finished if I would have worked swiftly.
I will try this crater again someday with a little more haste.

Lovely sketch

Frank, while i feel sorry for you that clouds intervened, i'm also happy to have a view at how your unfinished sketches look

i think it's actually quite a beautifull sketch already!

Nice unfinished sketch, it gives an insight into how you sketch lunar features, the weather is really fickle around here, summer finally arived and now i have to go back to work as a school teacher.

I actually like when people post either an unfinished sketch or a series that show how they got to their final sketch. As mentioned it shows their thought process and their mechanics. Nicely done Frank, as others have said.

Really good work as much as you were able to get done. Like the others, I can sure feel the pain of an incomplete effort.

Frank
Its a realy good sketch even if unfinished. The Main crater takes central stage evenmore as the unfinished areas become more of an impression.

Kris, T5, Jay, Roland and Jim,

Thank you all for your comments on my partial sketch.
I thought I might be able to continue a bit further from memory but I could not. For me sketching from memory is not possible.

Frank,

An excellent observation of Tycho even though not complete. You have recorded the walls and central peak nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.
