Where did SEDS go? new
      #311972 - 01/15/05 10:29 PM

Is anyone else having trouble getting to the SEDS website (www.seds.org)? The DNS registration still is active (IP 128.196.64.66) but any requests to hit the site timeout.

Hmm, doesn't look good. Here's a link that talks about the main site being "in a state of major overhaul."

http://www.uaseds.seds.org/projects.php

I guess that's true, if you call being offline an overhaul. I probably shouldn't be so hard on the folks at SEDS. Apparently, it's a volunteer organization and the only compensation the members get is the satisfaction of knowing they've got one of the best astro sites on the Web. Let's hope the overhaul is completed, soon.

About this time last year (just as they had their server hacked) SEDS had a major funding drive going. (Some of you may remember me being a pest about it... ) Their aim was a major upgrade. Could be that they are finally ready to get the job done.

To get around this, I've been going to Google, searching for [object name] +SEDS, and then going to the cached SEDS page. Except for the fact you don't get images, it works pretty well.

There's an Internet Archive out there that's attempting to do what the name implies, archive the entire internet's contents. They have a Way Back Machine that let's you look at old websites (and keeps tracks of changes on those which are still active). The link for the last SEDS website (updated Feb 2004) is:

Thanks!!! This is great info. I was also wondering why SEDS was unavailable.
