Great set-up! I'm kinda partial to SV scopes myself too. Anyway... (1) please describe the saddle and doveplate design for the SV-115EDT and SV-70R that you are using, and (2) how is the balance on the MG with everything hanging off one side of the mount? Thanks.
Thanks Bill and Jim!
I know it looks like balance/stability could be an issue with the two scopes hanging out there but it's really quite stable. The Stablelock tripod has a fairly wide splay and the legs are firmly locked in compression with the tray. That, coupled with the fact that the tripod and mount are quite heavy keeps the c.o.g. well within the tripod. The MG is really quite a brute and handles the scopes very smoothly with very acceptable damping times.
I normally use an SV F60 finder with the 115EDT and have the SVR70 mounted on a Tak Teegul mount/TV Gibraltar tripod for GnG. I have an 7.5" Vixen dovetail attached to the foot to help with balance when using 2" EPs (35 and 27 Pans).
The 115 is attached to the MG with a Tak Losmandy style saddle and TP6 dovetail plate. On the opposite side of the rings I have another regular Vixen dovtail attached that also serves as a grab handle (the 115 is fairly heavy!). I attached a Stellarvue Vixen style saddle to this dovetail which will hold the SVR70 and facilitate easy mounting, balancing and removal. I was initially concerned about alignment of the two scope and was considering using guidescope rings, but when I got the SVR70 mounted they lined up perfectly. Very lucky I guess!!!
The SVR70 is probably overkill as a finder but it does offer very nice alternative wide field views (12x/5.7 degrees with the 35 Pan and 16x/4.4 degrees with the 27 Pan).
And this is my story and I'm stickin' to it! Thanks for asking!

Phil,
For the "finder" is this a SV TD2 dovetail base and TP5 dovetail rail? I'm going to be ordering an SV-115T shortly, and I'd like to lock in on the "finder" to "scope" mounting specifics. Looks like ADM accessories may also have something similar to use depending on the OTA rings spacing. Thanks.

Jim,
Yes, the saddle is the TD2. I would have preferred to use the the TD5 dovetail as it is a bit shorter but the bored holes are not the correct spacing to match up with the spacing on the tapped 6mm holes in small foot on the SVR70 (the holes are quite close together--approx 16mm or 5/8"). I ended up with the EQD6 Dovetail from Scopestuff that is 8.25" long and has a couple of machined slots that allow a bit more flexibility in making the attachment.

Finally my 2.7 inch focuser came to complete the OTA, after nearly a year long wait with a makeshift shabby 2 inch focuser. The whole OTA is designed and crafted by the same guy. Great thanks to him!

Jeff, Very nice. How is the 115T? Been thinking of it as my next refractor..did you have an apo triplet before or is this your first one? Is a triplet really different than a very good doublet?
Thanks.

I had a Celestron 80ED and lost it to a wind gust. I also had my CPC-925 and would use the 80ED
piggyback. I liked the wider views of the refractor but it was a bit small to bring out dimmer objects.
I was looking at all the 102 doublets out available a few years ago when I saw the first ads for the SV115T.
I decided that it was better to pay a bit more and get something I wouldn't grow out off. The long
wait would give me time to save up for it. I ordered the SV115T from OPT at a early discount price
and waited 18 months until mine (#82) shipped.
I wanted something in a refractor that could show me more detail than a 80mm. I also figured that this
would be the largest and nicest refractor that I would ever buy. I don't think going to a larger
refractor would gain much in the view relative to the extra weight and cost. I mostly use it visually on
the DM4 mount but have used it for imaging on my Atlas.
I love taking the scope out to extremely dark rural Nevada and California skies. I am amazed how
great the views are compared to home. It fun comparing the view to my Zhummel Z12 dob. The dob
can go deeper but the views are more pleasing in the SV115T. I bought a Panoptic 41MM to take
in the wider objects like the whole veil complex or north america nebula. There is no color in the bright objects
and the scope takes magnification well. I like the ease of use and quick setup on on the alt-az mount
and the Sky Commander lets me find stuff when I can do it myself. I use the SV115T as my finder for my dob.
I can fit both scopes in the back of my Highlander without any problems. I think telescopes are like camera
lenses, its nice to have multiple tools available to take best advantage of the situation.
Is a triplet much better than a doublet? I think mine is but I never had a 115 mm doublet to compare it with.
The 115 gives me the detail I couldn't get in an 80. The quality of the SV115T means that I will never buy
another to replace it. I think that's where buying once and keeping for life is cheaper than trading up several times.
Jeff

Thanks for those extended comments Jeff. I can buy other gear with little deliberation but when it comes to a scope my decision process turns to mush. However I am sure that will change when I win the Powerball next week.

Hi Tammy, Yes it's him that made all the stuff. He is now in the process of perfecting everything from his focuser, mount to the tripod. I can't wait anymore so I get the focuser he just finished. It feels quite solid and smooth. I think in the near future it should be par with the top notch commercial focuser in the market. His current working list inlcudes several OTA such as TMB 170, 152 and a 6 inch altazimuth mouint and a rock solid tripod.
Anyway, my waiting now ends and I can fully enjoy the complete scope. Kurt

Hey cavefrog, that looks like an A80MF! I have the exact same scope and will try and post a picture to this thread. I bet it produces some beautiful widefield views when paired with that Televue EP.
