What beyond our Local Supercluster is brightest?
      #3286501 - 08/21/09 07:44 PM

Hallo, I am new to this board.

Which galaxies and clusters outside the Local Supercluster are brightest or most accessible to a Northern Hemisphere observer (53 degrees north)?

I have an 8 inch dobsonian and my club has 11-14 inch 'scopes (although neither my garden nor their observatory has completely dark skies).

I have read a lot about 3C 273 in Virgo and how that might be within 8 inch range. Also, I am wondering if NGC 1275 and the Perseus Cluster might be achievable as Perseus is in a good position for most of the Fall and Winter. Are these fair targets? Would be grateful for any other suggestions.

Hi Andrew and welcome to Cloudy Nights!

There are a number of galaxy clusters you can try such as the Pegasus I cluster (centered on NGC 7619) as well as the Pisces cluster (NGC 507 brightest) and AGC 262 (NGC 708 brightest) and AGC 347.

In your 8 inch under those conditions most will appear very small and faint but are worth going for on a good night.

With the Perseus cluster, NGC 1275 should be detectable with a moderate to high power and if you are lucky a few more very faint galaxies will be visible. (I picked out about a dozen with my old 10 inch).

3C 273 should be fairly easy at 13th mag - you just need a finder chart to identify the right 'star'. Can post one if you like.

Thanks for the encouraging suggestions, Alan. Pegasus I seems particularly promising: 2 mag 11.5 galaxies and an obvious star pattern nearby. I read on Atlas of the Universe that the Pegasus clusters constitute their own small supercluster separate from the Pisces-Perseus supercluster.

I would be grateful to see a finder map for 3C 273 if you (or anyone) had one handy, but no rush, it will be a few months before Virgo is visible at my lattitude at a reasonable hour.

Is Pegasus ever visible from NZ?

Here is an DSS image of 3C-273 processed to exclude really faint stars and yield a field of about one degree wide by 0.75 degree high centered on 3C-273. The faintest star shown is around 15th magnitude or so. Clear skies to you.

You're welcome. All of Pegasus is still visible although upside down compared to the way you see it. On a very clear night M31 can be seen as a fuzz very low in the north. Observationwise for faint stuff, anything below Dec +30N is fine at my location.

David and nytecam, thanks for the maps.

So you can see M31, the LMC, SMC and presumably a high NGC 253? The southern hemisphere sounds great for galaxies.

It certainly is and the milky way from a dark site is incredible. I do miss looking for objects in Ursa Major and Draco though - most of which never rise.
