Io itself was also crossing Jupiter but I was not able to pick it out under the existing seeing conditions. Sketching: 8/19/2009, 3:15 - 4:00 UT Telescope 10" f/5.7: 6mm ortho. (241 x) Sketch made on 9"x 12" sketching paper with 2B, 4B and HB graphite pencils, plastic and gum erasers, blending stumps. Contrast increased +2 and brightness decreased -2 using the scanner Seeing 6/10 Transparency 3/5 Mostly clear, 20°C (68°F) Frank McCabe -------------------- my gallery Post Extras:       Kris. You've captured the turbulence in the NEB nicely. Io is a lot harder to detect in front of a bright feature like the Equatorial Zone than some of the other Galilean moons are (e.g., Ganymede and Callisto). I looked and looked at this planet the other night at about 200 power under reasonable conditions. I must have some eyes issues because I just cannot get the level of detail with study, but I sure enjoy what you did and the others have done. You have recorded much detail across the jovian disk (bright rifts and dark condensations in the NEB and SEB). The Great Red Spot (GRS) is actually the "Great Salmon-Pink Spot" at this time. I have been having trouble getting satisfying glimpses of detail on Jupiter this year. Initially I could barely detect the shadow of Io but before long things settled down and I was seeing detail fleetingly. --- Roland, Something you might try if you have not already is to put a nebula filter between your eyepiece and objective. Sol, mentioned using one when he made a recent sketch on August 16th. It does work pretty well at times of poor seeing.
