Over 30 children and 10 adults attended my Astronomy / Art workshop "Deadly Moons" at ALCON 2009.
ALCON is The Astronomical Leagues annual convention. http://www.astroleague.org/

Above link shows some of the moons sketched by some very young children at the workshop .

Deadly is a street word meaning really cool , and is an expression used by children when they view our moon in my telescope " that's deadly " is a very commonly used by children here in Ireland and caught on in New York as well.

Deadly Moons teaches a little bit about our moon , and the other exotic moons in our solar system.
We learn about moon phases, busy moons , quite moons , Galilean moons, moon exploration and moon terminology . We have fun with moons and create our choices on black paper with soft pastels in vivid colors.

The workshop was organised by the Amateur Observers Society of New York http://www.aosny.org/
at Hofstra University Long Island NY. Some children came from the Science Camp at the university
and some came from AOS members Linda Prince's Young Astronomers Group.

Dee that was just wonderful! I wish I could have been there just to see the smiles of delight from the kids and and the twinkles of pride in the eyes of their parents! Looks like a fun and educational time for all involved!

Dee,

Congratulations to you one a job superbly done. The kids must have loved it. The sketches were wonderful.
As these kids get older they will never say that they can't sketch thanks to you Dee.

Dee

Was at your talk at ALcon (8/7, 2:00 PM) on astronomical sketching and it was great. Loved your solar sketches and your lunar sketches were particularly impressive. I was extremely interested in your sketches of Comet Holmes. Once again for those not at ALcon an excellent talk.

Dee,

Congratulations on your successful talk and workshop. I know that it is a lot of work but also very satisfying for both the presenter and the participants.

It was a great idea to include the moons of other bodies in the solar system, not just Luna. I enjoyed seeing all the different sketches in the video--the children were very creative!

Another comet like Holmes would be excellent.
