Hello Everyone!Had to take advantage of the excellent, cool crisp and dark skies last night over Slidell,Louisiana for a great oserving session.I had two instruments set up in my yard for this purpose-a 6" f/8 improved Konusky refractor, and a 6" f/8 Galileo newt. One of my purposes involved testing out the newtonian because it was first light,it did not fare that well but that was because of alignment issues. However I still pulled out the 6" and observed some fine deep sky objects.I was out for nearly an hour, and used the 20mm LER and 15mm Parks eyepieces.M36(1936) in Auriga was like diamonds on velvet,as well as M37(2099).I took note especially of M37 to me one of nature's exquisitely splendid open clusters-its members stars spread out nicely accross the field of the 15mm.The Double Cluster in Perseus easily detected visually is outstanding telescopically and I went from there to sweeping the Milky Way from Auriga through Perseus,Cassiopeia,Cepheus and Cygnus!Mars was rising during this session, and I looked at a very small gibbous disk no details noted. The night was cool and pleasant and I will be out again with the 8" scope this time ,hopefully this evening.Clear Skies!Gary

Yes, sir..rolled off the roof here in Mandeville last night. First nice night in nearly a month. Sure was nice getting out.
Have you ever attended one of Pontchartrain Astronomy Society's NorthShore Observer's Group meetings? If not, the next one will be at Counter Culture's which used to be PJ's on Sept. 16th. We have a good group and it's a very informal meeting.
I just took a quick glance at your webpage. I lived in Brandon from '87-'94. Small world!

I had the little ETX-80 out for about 3 hours last night myself (details in the ETX forum). I managed to get in a few clusters (NGC6940, NGC6633, NGC7789, NGC457, M52 and M103) in addition to a couple of double stars (Achrid & Almaak). I also spent some time on the Saturn Nebula (NGC7009). The Owl Cluster & Saturn Nebula were my favorites for the evening. I only quit after the dew chased me away....however our local condtions weren't as good as yours, but a clear night is a rarity these days so I made the most of it!

Hi David! Its nice to hear from some of our PAS members here on CN.yes I want to get to the Northshore Meeting,as well as the regular meeting, and hope to see you at one of them.I'm also glad to read that you got to look at the sky last evening. The viewing was the best in quite a while, and the Milky Way was outstanding.Gary

Hey Gary....are you in some sort of "black hole" in Slidell? All I can see of the Milky Way is just the tiniest hint of it. It was a nice night. Hard to believe that I was viewing in August and there was no sweat dripping off of my nose.
I don't make the general meeting much. With my business, it's tough to get across the lake. I'll push it when we have a good guest speaker. The last one I made was back in January, I believe, when David Levy was the speaker.
Anyway, see if you can get to the Slidell meeting.
David

I recall one professor telling the class that if we thought it was "slow going" crossing the lake via the causeway; that in a rush one could "barge" across!.
