Last Saturday night some clear and drier weather came my way, and naturally I drove out to a site west of my city to observe some deep sky objects with my 10-inch Dob. One of them was the galaxy NGC-6166 in Hercules, a giant 12th magnitude elliptical system over 400 million light years away. Nearby was another much fainter galaxy NGC-6158, a large S0 or E0 elliptical system with a magnitude of 13.7. Both were faintly visible at 188X, with NGC-6158 flitting in and out of visibility. It would look like a star, then turn into a tiny fuzzy patch with a bright core. It's by far one of the dimmest galaxies I've observed under pretty light polluted skies thus far. These galaxies form the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2199, which is a good object for those with big telescopes at dark sites. I could not see any of the other galaxies because either my telescope was not large enough or the light pollution there was too great. I hope to revisit this field from a truly dark location once I finish my 15-inch Dob.

Taras,
An excellent observation of an interesting elliptical galaxy in Hercules. I am certain that it was a challenge for you even under dark skies. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Nice sketch....and working on a 15 inch!!!! As soon as I hit a little over 12 inches, I noticed quite a difference in the objects and the variety of what I could see. You are really going to have fun.
