Jup GRS,barge,08/23
      #3292149 - 08/24/09 10:13 PM Attachment (14 downloads)

Last night the skies were calm and clear so i set up my 6"C6R refractor for some looks at jupiter. I wanted to try our my new 6mm U.O. orthro HD eyepiece. Jupiter was fairly high in the sky when the grs crossed the meridian around 10;30 local CDT time. The seeing was strange going from crystal clarity to mush in seconds then back to steady like the beginning of a outer limits episode. During the steady times the planet was awesome with more detail then i could sketch, sometimes the clouds of jupiter almost look liquid with the colored stuff floating above the white brightness, almost like when you see fish capilliares with the blood cells flowing through them, i remember seeing this on moving pictures taken from the Cassini probe as it headed past jup on its way to saturn. Anyway the darkest thing on the planet is the barge following the grs around jup in the seb, the thing could be seen as other stuff went to mush, the neb was very turbulant looking like inverted sea waves, the north side of the neb had many very dark sections, the grs seemed to float alone above the seb as if it didn't want to mess with the seb at all. Best view was at 200x with my trusty #11 yellow-green filter, this along with my lt. green filter often produce the best jup views.

Tommy5,

I saw this view too. Very nice capture of the details.
Jupiter is at its very best now beginning at the time of your sketch. Very nice post.

Tommy this is an excellent sketch and very interesting observation report! I'm very happy that your Chicago weather gave you several periods of good seeing. Lovely detail in the bands and the GRS.

T5,

Your sketch is an accurate rendering of the view as I saw it 2 days later--things hadn't changed that much.

I like your description of the variable seeing--sometimes I'm tempted to keep messing with the focus when it's like that but one is better off to keep hands off and be patient.

I used the #11 filter to advantage in my latest observation, too.

Thanks Micheal, the #11 and Lt. green filter seem to bring out the most detail in jup observations, the variable seeing is one reason i really like driven scopes chasing a planet across the fov while it is getting fuzzy then clear is a real pain.

Tommy,

An excellent observation and report of Jupiter. Your description of the jovian atmosphere with the colors and flow is what brings us all back to the king of the planets. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos
