Tonight's Shadow Show
      #3293403 - 08/25/09 02:29 PM

Don't forget to pull your Qs out for tonight's shadow show starring Ganymede and Europa. Both are visible on Jupiter's face from 10:20 p.m. EDT to 1:12 a.m. EDT.

CS,
Charles

Thanks for the info, Charles.

Will hope the sky remains clear...

My apologies...this is tomorrow eve (8/26). Blame too many late nights at the office...the 'ol brain ain't exactly firing on all 8 cylinders.

Charles

Get out there...it's happening! Just came in from the show. 2 tiny, crisp, shadows, one noticeably larger than the other crossing the face...and ol' Jup appears to have only 1 moon. Quite a sight in my '64 Quartz.

Charles

Well, I'm confused. Both my neighbor and I observed three dark spots traversing the equator, as in my rather pathetic retouched sketch, below. This is as it appeared at about 10pm MDT. One had to be a satellite, but in my past observations these have always appeared lighter than the surface of the planet, not darker. I had about an hour of good seeing, good enough for a fairly steady image through the 8mm Brandon with barlow. I called it quits when the image began to degrade, and missed the re-emergence of Io. All in all, though, it was quite a spectacle.

Hi ColoHank.
I think one of the dark spots you saw was Ganymede itself. That moon is rather greyish and shows up against the brighter clouds of Jupiter.

My view of the shadows with the ol' Q was quite nice.
Even using 86x, the big shadow of Ganymede and the tinier shadow of Europa could be seen pretty clearly. Ganymede's shadow was right on the limb of the planet and looked like somebody had taken a tiny bite outta Jupiter.

Hi Hank,

Very nice rendering Hank... that is exactly what I observed as well... I thought
the "center spot" looked like a projection from the NEB into the EZ...

The '89 Q 3.5 performed best using the 12 mm Brandon --- no filter---
under a less than serene sky...

Thanks,

Matt

Nice drawing. I saw the same third dark spot pretty much in the position you did..didn't know what I was seeing. Used the 8mm Brandon with barlow. Happy that the Questar brought the objects across Jupiter into view. Lenny Silverman
