497 controller for ETX-80 new

Will the Meade 497 controller work with my ETX-80? I have an opportunity to pick up a new one cheap!!

I haven't tried it, but from what I've read here and on other sites it works fine. If the ETX isn't listed as one of the scopes during set up, just pick ETX70 and away you go...

It should work fine, I use a #497 controller on my ETX-60BB and if I recall right the ETX-80 is on the list. If not you may have to download the latest updater and firmware from Meade. I just updated all of my #497's and it went pretty smoothly.

Yes, the 497 will work with the ETX-80. There's an option I believe under Utils that allows you to select which scope you're using, and there's a pre-programmed setting for the ETX-80. You may have to run the train and calibrate routines again to account for the 80's different gear ratios.

Nice find, one of these days I might do the same. I have both the #497 and #494 now, but the controller only "remembers" one scope at a time, hence the need to re-train and calibrate each time you migrate a controller.

I found this on a Ritz Camera store bargain bin for $13. So you might keep your eyes open at Ritz.
