Hi there. I'm Manousos, a two year amateur astronomer from Greece. This is my first post here in CN and I need your help please.
In the last two years I have made a several number of observing sessions (above 50). In the last one I made a personal record (at least I think so) catching the very dim photons of a galaxy. The galaxy was the 3d member of Hickson 94 galaxy group, the H94c or PGC 70943. This galaxy is about 15,6 magnitude (in my Hickson catalog) .
The object was verified by my friend, an experienced observer too. Our observing site is in Crete island in Skinakas observatory (about 5000 feet height), with very good sky. Does anyone have observed this galaxy? Is it possible to see a 15,6 magnitude object with 12"?
Thank you in advance.

Well done and yes a galaxy of that magnitude is possible with a 12" especially if you have a dark sky (I presume that will be so at 5000 ft!). Being a small, compact and relatively high surface brightness object helps too.

Of course it is. My notes with 8" dobson say I saw only two brightest galaxies from Hickson 94 on an excellent night. The C-component and other faint galaxy MAC 2316+1845 might be within the limits of my 8". Worth a shot under good skies.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I was never go so deep and I was surprised. Until now the faintest galaxy I've observed was 15,2 (not certainly sure) and the jump to 0,4 mag up was "scared me". I was wondering if the magnitude is correct.
Does anyone now about a reliable source with magnitude values in these faint galaxies?

Keep in mind that brightness is often quoted in the photographic range. A target might be brighter or dimmer than that visually, depending on whether it has more or less light near the scotopic peak (around 510nm).
Cheers, -- Jeff.

I've seen mag 15.9 stars with my 12" from a suburban site, so a small HSB galaxy of mag 15.6 could very well be possible with a 12" from a dark sky site at 5000ft

In a small search that I have done, I've discovered that the magnitude values of the hickson galaxies are in b and not v magnitude. Thus, it could be possible to be brighter than 15,6 in v magnitude.
One good night I've reach above 16 magnitude stars, so it could be possible to see much fainter objects than this.
