3 good and 1 great night are the Oregon Star Party. So beautiful it is hard to commit to a lot of drawing. The Milky Way drawing actually took about 4 hours over 3 nights.
Help me decide which to enter in the August contest: B145 or the Milky Way

Aaron,
Truly wonderful! Your capture of the details in these objects are fantastic. Very hard to choose but I love your Naked Eye Milky Way as you have captured the dark and light areas majestically.

Awesome sketches. I say you should choose the Milky Way, but I think the compression is hurting the B145 sketch a lot so it's hard to say...

Aaron,
Outstanding observations of Barnard 145, The Pelican nebula (IC 5070), and a naked eye sketch of the Milky Way. They have been executed very nicely. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

All of your three sketches are beautifully done.
I especially like your Naked Eye Milky Way as I have an affinity for the big picture. You have shown great execution of the smearing/blending of the chalk. This is a great example by you to show how to render nebulosity; what makes pastel chalks so fun to use.
I attended, I think seven Oregon Star Parties in the past. 1992 ~ 2002 and sorry to have missed this one. I had only begun to sketch the sun at that time in 2002; actually an early whole sun and close-up prominence sketch in colored pencils that I have temporarily lost (never posted here *yet.)
Keep up the good work!

Everyone, thanks for the positive words and the help choosing a favorite. It seems pretty conclusive that the Milky Way sketch will go into the August contest.
It was so fun to draw, though I couldn't help feeling guilty that I was squandering super-dark-sky-time as my telescope sat idle next to me. I keep reminding myself that looking up is just as valuable a use of my time as looking through the eyepiece.

That is indeed a beauty! However, now that you've entered the sketch to the August 09 Imaging/Sketching Contest would it be possible to see the sketch in bigger resolution and without the annoying *.jpg data packing
800 x 600 in *.gif would probably do the trick and do the sketch more justice!

Aaron,
Very rich rendering of the Milky Way--I can see why it took so much time. The major constellation included in the view are instantly recognizable. Nice work!

Thanks, I actually am a bit disappointed by the reconizability of the constellations, but maybe I'm just not familiar with them enough. (I did have to re-check a chart to remember them as I drew to ensure I was representing them well). I'll try an 800x600 gif

I had to compress slightly to fit the limit with gif too (originally it was 400K, now 200K but I can't post to the forum until below 100K). I don't see any improvement. What am I doing wrong?
