It was a beautiful clear night in northern Illinois. After setting up, I prowled around the gibbous disk, looking for a target. I spent some time viewing old friends Gassendi, Copernicus, Plato, and others; finally I settled on the much smaller (34 km) Kepler, with an attractive array of subtle rays extending into the surrounding terrain.

Thanks for looking!

Tom,

This is an excellent sketch. I also was out sketching last evening. Kepler is one of my favorite targets because of those super rays. You have done a super job in capturing them. Thanks for posting this fine sketch. I have noted you have not been posting much lately. Good to have you back.

Frank

It's good to be back! And thanks for your comments. A combination of weather, mosquitoes, and family obligations have limited my observing time this summer.

It's funny, I thought that with the last of the kids moving out I'd have lots of time, but noooooo...

Tom, great sketch of Kepler and beautiful surrounding rays! You've captured everything that gives this crater it's uniquely identifiable characteristics. The offset peak and rough debris on the floor are marvelously rendered, as are the small craters and hills in the area. You have really done a remarkable job with this white on black technique!

Tom,

An excellent observation of Kepler. You have recorded this crater's floor (peak), walls, and rays very nicely. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Carlos

Very nice, Tom. I like the subtle shading around the crater.
