More Hicksons - a video report new
      #3294619 - 08/26/09 01:13 AM

I continued my quest to observe Hickson compact galaxy groups on Friday, August 21. I traveled to Plettstone in the Sierra Foothills with Mark Wagner (known on Cloudy Nights as Lumpy Darkness) and had a great night of observing. I tried something new and made a video observing report. Managed nine more Hicksons this trip.

Let me know what you think.

That was awesome!

Please make more videos like this one! A new kind of observing report! Fascinating stuff!

Clear skies!

Thanks, Thomas. It was fun to make, but it took a lot of time. Much more than just writing up a report. I'll probably make another at some point, but not everytime I go observing.

I really enjoyed the report. The pics of the galaxies were very well blended with your commentary. Thanks so much for taking the time to put that together.

Thanks, Jeff. I pretty much just read what I wrote down during the night.

Hey, your scope is living large! Nice eyepiece collection you've got!

Your scope is living 8 inches larger! I hope to have one of those one day. Not to mention the dark sites you travel to - NICE. BTW I'm Jeff, I just changed my sig b/c folks were getting my name confused with Floyd Bennett Field (my closest CSC site) - LOL. Anyway, thanks again for the excellent report on the Hickson galaxy groups.

Richard...

Excellent report..enjoyed it very much. I also enjoy finding galaxies with my 10" Meade SCT, but can only dream of seeing the Hickson groups you saw with your 18" Dob.

There are Hickson's you can see in a 10" scope! Stephen's Quintet is doable as are a few others.

Thanks for the kind words.

Richard

Really enjoyed your video report. Refreshing! I also have an 18" and have logged 31 Hicksons - not as many as you obviously. Keep the reports coming!

Glad you liked it, Jim. Actually, I'm only a couple ahead of you. I've got 34 Hicksons logged. I've seen a few others in other peoples scopes, but I don't count those for my logs. I'm not sure I can get out observing this month either. :-(

If you get to a dark site and have good charts you might be surprised how many you can see and how many more you can at least detect. With my 12.5" I have been able to see/detect a total of 42 so far. My grand total to date is 43 with using the 25" to get Hickson 50. I think it's 8 groups I've found with my 6" but that's just guessing without notes in front of me.

Never believe you can't see something unless you've given it a few real good tries. Then go try again.

Richard, nice report by the way.

William Optics 80mm ZenithStar ED II

Observing sessions grand total for 2008, 121.
So far in 2009, 92

Bill..

I agree that a trip to a darker site away from my somewhat light polluted suburb of KC would reveal many more fainter targets.

I am going to try and find Stephans Quintet/NGC 7331 later this fall when Andromeda gets higher in the evening sky.

Thanks for the suggestions and take care/clear skies.
