17mm Hyperion won't come to focus in my PST... new
      #3317367 - 09/05/09 05:47 PM

Hello,

I just bought a pair of 17mm Hyperions to use with my binoviewer currently on it's way to my home. In the meantime, I wanted to try them out mono in my PST. To my dismay, they won't come to focus. It's close, but not close enough. (actually, I accidently unscrewed the focus knob when I got to the end, luckily it screwed back on easily and doesn't seem to be any worse for the wear)

Basically, I'm concerned that they won't come to focus in my Denk binos with a PST corrector. Will there be some differences focus-wise that this combo will give me that will allow proper focus? Or is this a known problem?

FWIW I've had problems with some EPs coming to focus in my PST. UO volcano top orthos will not focus in mine.

Can this problem be solved with a barlow? (like a binoviewer in a newt) Unfortunately, I don't have one right now to try.

Odd. I've used my 8mm and 24mm and didn't note any issues. The 8mm is my favorite general purpose eyepiece with the PST.

Ok, correction. It does come to focus after all. I had forgotten that I put in a 28mm extension (Tuning ring) before I tried it the first time. Guess the sun was frying my brain. So, the 17mm as-is works, but does not with a tuning ring.

So, we'll see if it works with the Denks. (with the tuning rings, that is...)

Steve,

How do you find the eye placement with that 8mm Hyperion and the PST? It seemed very tricky to me with my 17mm, more so than any other EP I've ever used. A little left or right and you have complete blackout.

It is a little more unforgiving than some but when I am centered it does give me a really pleasing image. The other eyepiece I use is the 20mm (Kelner?) that came with the PST plus a 2x barlow. I've not tried the Cemax line but have not read enough to convince me to drop more cash there vs. elsewhere.
