David K,
What is the best magnification to see the notch in your 9.25"?

Thanks

Stef (UK)

Generally, I get the best views of it at 58x and 78x in my NexStar 9.25, although I have used up to 98x on it on a really good night. From my dark sky site, both powers will show a little of the "snout", although the form is still fairly vague. In my 100mm f/6, I generally use about 25x and the H-Beta filter (24mm Panoptic) to try and catch a hint of the notch, although it takes a really good night to do this. Clear skies to you.

It seems like I read something within the last year about the magic eyepiece for looking at the HH. I think this was using a low power eyepiece for the brightest image of HH, if I remember corectly. Anyone remember the formula for the correct eyepiece to see the Horsehead?
Clear Skies, Buddy

Barbara Wilson in her article on the "Magic Horsehead Eyepiece" claims that a power that yields around a 5mm exit pupil (5.1x per inch of aperture) is pretty close to optimal for the nebula. Clear skies to you.

If you look on this page of the Lumicon site about half way down, you will notice they have suggested exit pupils for the various filters. http://www.lumicon.com/astronomy-accessories.php?cid=1

A couple of years ago my sons and I borrowed our club's 2" Lumicon H-Beta and checked out a number of targets. I don't remember what eyepiece/magnification we used with our 10" f/6 dob, but I do remember that the Horse Head was easy to find and very well defined, so much so that we were very pleasantly surprised. Our sky is approaching mag. 6, so ok but not great. On the other hand, I am still struggling with getting a good view of the Cocoon, though we have enjoyed spending time exploring its very cool surroundings.
