More Sketches Of Jupiter 9-10-09
      #3326368 - 09/10/09 04:28 PM Attachment (57 downloads)

Here are my latest sketches of Jupiter from last nights viewing. In sketch 3 there were white ovals as well as dark ones. The white ones were primarily in the STB. The dark ones were seen in the NEB and SEB and the NNTB. I observed at 208x. I have been trying to go higher with the magnification but the conditions have not cooperated. I hope to pick up some more detail at the higher magnification. The seeing still allowed me to get a nice view and it seems the more I sketch the more I see. I did try 416x to see if I could see any detail on Ganymede and I thought I saw that it was darker on the lower portion of the moon (southern region).
I like the way my Televue 7.4 mm ep works on Jupiter. The contrast with this ep is really good. The tone seems to be more brown in tone versus a meade ep I have. In addition the apodizing mask has been so helpful in providing more contrast. I am glad I took the time to make this mask. The first 2 sketches were first posted on "Dark impact mark in Jupiters south polar region." Sketch 2 shows the remnant of the Wesley Impact Scar. Dean

I forgot to mention that Oval BA is visible near the CM below the STB. Dean

Dean,

Wonderful sketches! Keep them coming.

The 7.4mm Tele Vue Plossl has a very soft spot in my heart. Many, many Moons ago, I purchased an 80mm Celestron refractor for my son, and got myself hooked on this hobby. The 7.4 was the first eyepiece purchased for myself, and is still a workhorse in the stable. Along with a Japanese made 7mm Nagler, the first premium eyepiece I purchased, the 7.4 has been used to star test telescopes I have acquired through the years. The optics of both eyepieces are superb.

Thanks Tommy5. I now waiting for the weather to clear for my next session with Jupiter. Dean

Dean,

Excellent and detailed set of observational sketches. Seeing them together gives one a good sense of the dynamic nature of the Jovian cloudtops. Nice catch on BA (which has moved to ~System II 295°)

Thank you Michael. With Oval BA at system II 295 degrees that is seen approximately on sketch #4 (system II 300.25) with Oval BA being a little past the CM. In deriving these coordinates are these your own estimations or do you get these coordinates elsewhere? Thanks again. Dean

Dean,
I have been estimating the position of Oval BA from the images and notes on Chris Go's website. Chris has been tracking BA for some time.
http://www.redspotjr.com/

John Sabia also keeps track of BA, although he has not updated its position for a while.

Dean,

Excellent observations of Jupiter showing a wealth of detail. You have recorded much detail across the jovian globe. The Wesley Comet Impact Scar has been stretched significantly as evident in your observation (#2). Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos

Carlos, Thank you very much. I've been inspired by your sketches and others on this forum. I especially like the way you color the background on your sketches to harmonize with the planets' color. The wealth of detail in your drawings is great and I've tried to bring my own up to this level. The magnification you've been able to employ has enabled you to capture some fine detail. After posting your SPR sketch I've been looking at that region too. It seems that is an area where white ovals appear in abundance. Last night when viewing Jupiter the seeing was fair but I noticed that the STB appears rather dark above the GRS extending almost across the entire disk. I wonder if that belt is becoming darker or is it just something that I have not noticed? This belt was almost as dark as the NEB and SEB. I look forward to your next sketch and know that it will be an opportunity to learn. Dean
