Seeing Proplyds
      #3328666 - 09/11/09 08:17 PM

Some of the most over the top observations visually I can think of being made visually with large reflectors was a gravitational lens and a jet shooting from M87.

While both are impossibly out of my grasp, that doesnt stop me from wondering about something equally compelling and probably even further from my grasp...

Is it possible AT ALL for the gigantic reflectors 30" and over to glimpse the proto planetary discs in M-42 that Hubble imaged so terrifically.

Theoretically, I'd imagine the angular resolution is there but brightness and contrast seem like a lost cause. Add to that the odd contrast of one particular proplyd thats DARK on a lighter gas glowing background.

Is this too crazy to consider even with the "over thirty" crowd?

Excellent seeing, desert sky and 1000x ....

There would probably be better protoplanetary disks out there, I think. Some not imposed on a bright nebular background.

Well there is that one that for all intent and purpose appears black with the dim starry speck in the center. Id count out the starry speck in the center, but itd be cool if some huge mirror could resolve that visually for an observer.

On the face of it , it seems a no-go... but I never would have conceived anyone could make out a gravitational lens either, much less M-87s jet.

Sounds like you're a candidate to start working the AINTNO catalog.
