ETX-70 question ??
      #3331260 - 09/13/09 10:26 AM

Anyone happen to know what the minimum focus distance(in feet) on the ETX-70 is?
Have someone willing to let one go really cheap, and was needing to upgrade my nasty ole spotting scope for digiscoping.

Your help is greatly appreciated in advance!!

Scott (too much for birding) B

According to Meade's manual for the ETX-60/70, the near focus distances are:

Near focus (approx.)
ETX-60AT ..............................................................15 ft. (4.6m)
ETX-70AT ..............................................................17 ft. (5.2m)

That close?
Guess it would bring a whole new meaning to Marco Photography.....

Thanks, I'll give the guy a call and see if he'll take 10% less then the asking price of $75.00 if I come and pick it up? The glass doesn't happen to be good does it?(meaning APO/ED/Flourite, or something along those lines)

Not sure on the 70's, but I have an 80, and while it's not rare-earth elements, the apochromatic crown and flint are of what I consider to be very good quality, especially given the price range of the instruments (the 80's are under $300 brand new, and if you poke around, you can find them for around $220-240.) Seems as though I used to have a website that sold refractor elements and cells, but for the life of me can't lay my hands on it now. Eventually I'd love to replace the glass in this OTA with a nice ED or the like.

If the AutoStar mount still works, that's not a bad price for the ETX-70.

I scored!!
The guy was a little deseperate for some cash(note: never tell the person buying your "for sale item" that you really need some money)! I gave him $55.00
The focus seems to be a little loose, but it works. The tripod has a "foot" missing on one of the legs.... The mount works too!! Downloaded the User Manual from Meade, and will spend a few days going through it(raining anyway). Wondering if it has a "Tracking Bird Slew Rate"?

Thanks for your help!

Feel free to toss some batteries (or plug it in if you have the right adapter) and acquaint yourself with it during the day. The more familiar you get with the scope, controller, mount, etc., the less hassle you'll have in the dark trying to use it. You'll need to train/calibrate during daylight anyway, so this will give you a good excuse. Do some "mock" alignments, practice setting the various slew rates, etc. You'll be glad for the time you put into it.

Congrats on a nice little grab-n-go scope, for a really great price! We'll be looking forward to your first light report!

Going to need an eyepiece that is more in line for what I need. This seems pretty dark compared to my spotting scope and it doesn't have the light gathering ability this optic does.

First light(sort of):

This bird was taken on a feeder in my backyard from the house....24 yards.

Scott (thanks for putting up with my questions) B
