Ha Sun 13th September - Full Disk & Proms ~13.00ut new
      #3331469 - 09/13/09 12:31 PM

Had my first go of 'merging' a top and bottom half of todays sun shots - as you might expect there's a nice line showing the join

Any tips of better ways to make a more seamless join would be greatly appreciated. Taken with SM40 @ f10.

I think the trick is either to get a DMK41 or find a 0.8x focal reducer or the like

Hi Mark,

very nice for a first merged image. You might try 'Autostitch' - but the free version decreases the quality somehow.

Good shot Mark. Try making a selection (on the edge of the top layer/pane only) and then feather that selection .e.g by 20 pixels or what ever works best(I use photoshop but I'm sure paintshop and gimp both have somthing similar, I can't remeber which one you use). Then use curves/levels to try and match the edge of the top layer with the layer underneath. The feathered selection should stop the changes in curves from effecting the rest of the layer too much. You may need a number of different selections in different places to get the match. For this I would make selections on the left hand and right hand sides.

Once the 2 layers match fairly close use the rubber tool (make the opacity and flow both about 50%)to delete the top layer where the overlap is.

I think there is also a program avaialbe which will do the job automatically, but I can't remeber what it is called.

After curves it will look somthing similar to this. Then just delete the overlap with eraser/rubber tool (but with the relevent settings that work best).

Thanks for the tips and kind words. I'm currently having a go at some reprocessing, but, tbh, it's gonna take me a bit of practicing with this me thinks...

Matching the panes with curves reminds me of a scene from Feather Ted. He is trying to remove one small dent from a car with a hammer but proceeds to cover the entire car with numerous other small dents.

ROFL!

That's exactly how it feels tbh! I've given up on 'merging' for today. Just doing the final few from today conventionally, i'll post em up here then i'm going to the pub for a pint and spot of dinner. Should finish off a good day just nice

I use iMerge but it gives only slightly better results. The focal reducer causes the sweet spot to be more apparant usually. I would say just go with what you got and appreciate the beauty of it.
