Hi Folks,
I have acquired 2 identical, matched mirrors.
They are 310mm diameter, f4.5 65mm thick and have Gold coatings (originally intended for IR work, no doubt)
They were made by the Delft Optical works in the Netherland just before the works was closed down.
The Delft Optical works made specialist optical instruments for both military and medical industries, so there is no doubt in my mind that these mirrors will be figured to a high precision.
Unfortunately, there is no paperwork with the mirrors (got lost over time, no doubt) so I intend to have them tested and certified by our local optical specialists.
My problem is this: What do I do with these mirrors???
I'm not interested in 12" Newtonian binoculars, nor am I really interested in making a telescope (made so many over time that I've run out of energy and rather just buy a ready made scope - my sig bears that out )
Anyone have any creative ideas?
Gold plated ashtray mebbe??
Any and all suggestions will be considered

Are they spherical? Are they parabola's? Hyperbola's? Elipsoids?
Also : If they are made for IR work, they may not be well enough corrected for visual work. IR wavelenghts are far bigger then the typical 55nm we're used to for visual. A simple foucault test may give you more information on that.
You may want to sell 'm, or better, donate 'm to a local ATM- or astronomy club? Anyone with a bit handiness and ATM experience must be capable to refigure them into decent mirrors, if they allready aren't.

Good questions Stefan, hence my intention to have them tested and get some quantitative and qualitative specification. Once I've gotten that, I'll have a better idea of what to do. Maybe, assuming they're decently parabolic and figured for the visual spectrum, I could make 2 scopes for outreach - that'll mean I don't have to cart my SCT's around.
Let's see what transpires.

Yeah, but have you ever made a 12" Infrared Binocular Newtonian Telescope (IRBNewt) ?

Why not?, a 12" binocular must me amazing, yes, I know, It can be a very complicated project, but I'm thinking about the images that you can see with a 12" binocular and I need a bib Yes, I know too, may be you'd need a truck to transport the binocular, but, here in Spain we have a quote, "Walk or not, the donkey, will be better big"
-------------------- There is not closed doors, there is not impossible pictures, you only must learn how to do it, or you don't have all what you need
