Hi,
I have seen that the second edition of this book has recently published.
Please, could anybody give me some information about this book?
Is is worth the first edition or the second one?
Thanks in advance

Though the second edition has a little more info and a few updates, the first edition isn't obsolete. Either would be excellent in a library of good astronomy books.

I ordered a copy for myself. I figure it's a good reference book to own.

Gents -- I just ordered the second edition, myself, today. Has anyone already received their copy? I ordered directly from Willmann-Bell, the publisher, who is presently offering the book for an introductory price of $29.95, no tax and free shipping! (regular price $34.95) Willmann-Bell Order Page Any comments from new owners of the brand-new 2009 second edition? (first edition was published 15 years ago already).

I got mine, and it's wonderful. Give me a few weeks to read it, though.

I got this when it was first published a few months back. It appears to have an expanded section on identifying various aberrations, and Suiter's explanation of a "wobbly stack" of issues that influence what we can see is wonderful. Suiter's book has a lot of "meat". I refer to it often. My first edition is well-worn. I suspect this second edition will become the same way. If you like this, a good companion book, also from Willmann-Bell, is "Telescope Optics" from Rutten and van Venrooij. These two books together will teach you a lot about telescopes.

I also received the 2nd edition a few months ago. It looks like there's a lot of good, useful information in that book. I've skimmed it, read a couple chapters, but have set it aside for when I have time to read it straight through and digest all the info - which might as well be this weekend, seeing as how it's Full Moon, bad weather and Halloween! I don't have "Telescope Optics" yet, but that's also on my wish list. I think most any book that comes up as often as these two do when the advanced members of CN are discussing their various topics is worthy of space on an amateur's shelf. Kudos to Wilmann-Bell, also. Good books, reasonable prices and shipping ... and they're in the next state over: speedy delivery and no state tax!

Don,
Please, could you confirm that this is the book you are recommending:

Maybe. It's a technical book analyzing optics of various telescopes and eyepieces from a spot-diagram analysis. Many aberrations are also touched on. I don't think it is a book for beginners, and it might not be the right book if you are looking for a book that merely describes different types of optical configurations. But then, Suiter's book is also quite technical, and if you don't find that intimidating, "Telescope Optics" will be a breeze, and it is a valuable book to own.
