If you could find a map of the light pollution in your country, that would be helpful. I imagine though you have high places if not mountains that are accessible by car, not in a dangerous area and yet dark enough for your needs. While everybody likes jet black skies, if you can find a good site 60 or 80 kilometers outside of Zagreb and not too near other towns, military bases, prisons and other sites that are brightly lit up at night, you'll be able to see plenty of objects. From a site at most 25 kilometers to the west of my city, I can see 13th magnitude galaxies with my 10-inch or 25-cm Dobsonian, and there is a lot of light pollution near the horizon. A dark site that you can only get to once or twice a year is not nearly as useful as one you can reach in an hour at the cost of some light pollution near the horizon. After all, you have to drive back home and possibly go to work the next day.

well the only good site i found was on top of the mountain just above the city it`s only 20min drive think it`s 3500ft elevation.
i could see the milky way with my bare eyes, aloooooot of stars thru 25mm for widefield and even managed to see 2x spirals in M51 with my ED80...
the only problem is that the south side of the sky is not even close as that and i can clearly see a globe of light polution rising above the city up to 30-40% of the south sky.
so i`m trying to find a spot that would be good every where u look not just E N W and still in 30min car range
i know i might be picky and should be lucky since most ppl don`t even have that so close but i`d hate to realise after 3 years of observing that there is a better spot just a stone throw away

Google if I'm not mistaken has light pollution maps for much of the world, and maybe they have them for Southeastern Europe. If so, look for a site in the yellow or green zone, blue would be even better. Black is as dark as it can get. If you can, putting a mountain or mountains between you and Zagreb's lights will help a lot.

Petrova Gora would be the nearest and quite good site - I think they get 21,4 mag/arcsec2. The best sky in Croatia is at Lastovo: check the reports: http://www.temnonebo.org/pmwiki.php?n=Lokacije.Lastovo
