Dark night observation new
      #3341105 - 09/18/09 10:25 AM

Good day everyone. Last night was very special for me as I was able to get to a dark site for the first time in a long time.
At home I am unable to view the southern skies due to excessive lighting ( businesses, lumber mills , and a well lit bike path) in that part of the sky. What a treat it was to visit my old friends and the milky way is still there! I found a dark clear spot with a very flat southern horizon with hills directly behind me which just allowed m-31 to peak over the pine trees. Sagittarius sat just above the horizon and the view through the milky way to Cassiopeia was extremely humbling! I had picked up a very old tripod yesterday probably from the 50s or 60s called a Star D by Davidson which extends to over 7' and is a perfect fit for my 20x70 and 10x50 bins. I had never viewed the sky from a dark site before with large stable bins and I am still blown away with the volume of stars I was able to see in the wfov.
After returning home I sat outside for a couple of hours and just marveled at the difference in the skies. How easily I have become dulled to the glow of city life!
Enjoy the clear dark skies my friends, Doug..........

Sagittarius is a feast for the eyes from a dark site through binos. The same goes for M31/32/110.

Doug...

Very nice report. Yes, our observing senses do get dulled by the sky glow in urban and suburban areas. Thanks for the reminder to get to dark sites as often as possible.
