Hello all, I have a telescope given to me by a friend. It was his father's before he passed away awhile ago, who was doing a refurbish on it. It doesn't have any tags on it so I don't know what make it is, but I am told it is from the 60's. It came with a wood tripod, eyepieces, complete mount, and it all is in a wooden box. The father has refurbished the tube and mount but looks like along the way the objective got damaged. It looks like the back lens has been fractured all around the outside like it was damaged when someone took it apart. I would hate to see this end up in the trash just because of this damage. Can anyone tell me where I could find another one? The outer edge of the objective housing is labeled '90mm X 1200mm' so I assume this is what I need. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Ham, to the classics ward of cloudy nights institution. I saw 90mm, refractor, and 1960's and immediately thought this was going to turn out to be another fabulous Sears 90 X 1400 (f/15.5) unearthed before our eyes, but I see yours has a focal length of 1200mm (f/13.3). Now I'm thinking yours is a fabulous different scope from the '60's. Is the tube white or another color, and will you post some photos of it? Someone here may recognize your scope.
Clamshell chips around the objective element may not be fatal. Before you buy a new objective you might want to try masking the edges or take a sharpie pen to the chips. Depending on how deeply they encroach toward the center of the glass, you may find this telescope can produce fine images even with the damage. Maybe better than new glass. Before you remove the objective, make sure you know what you're doing (keeping the lenses oriented, cleaning w/o scratching the glass).
Winding up in the trash!?! !! No No No!
Could it read 80 X 1200?
Sheesh! Wind up in the trash! Nurse, I need something to help me sleep!

I wouldn't really trash it, but I do know people that probably would.. Anyway here is a picture in the box.

Well that looks like a Selsi. Anyways that objective is beyond hope. I couldn't do a job that good on purpose. Even if I loosened up the retaining ring and kept dropping it over and over on a carpeted floor from a sitting position about a couple dozen times. Mike

That lens wasn't in Prestons hands was it?
You know he's been known to do that on occasion. Preston Cleaning Glass
I would have to agree with Keith, does the label possibly read 80x1200. The 90X1200 would be a rare focal length.
Post some more pics.
Cheers,

Well I am glad someone around here can read whats on the objective. You folks are correct and it is 80X1200. Hopefully that will make it easier to find a replacement..Also knowing the person I doubt he was the one to cause the problem. He probably got it that way and didn't get that far on the restoration.

Wow, MEGA clamshell chips!!! Forget the sharpie. It's not so bad though, there is a clear edge at 2:00 and another at 5:00. I agree with James that this looks like Preston's Silver Hammer has been at play again!
I agree with Mike that this scope appears to be like the 80 X 1200 SELSI or 80 X 1200 ATCO recently displayed here in the classics forum. I believe your formerly fantastic objective was made by HOC (Hino Optical). The build of the rest of the telescope if Hino, is excellent. Can you describe or photograph the shape of the wood leg that slides? A photo straight down shows the shape best.

Oh that's funny.........
"Bang, Bang, Pres-tons Silver Hammer came down.....upon the lens. Ba-dump-bump-bump....Bang, Bang, Pres-tons Silver Hammer made sure, the lens was dead"
Sorry HamRadio. Just went a bit off topic.
Is there writing on the other side of the lens cell. Does the dew shield slide on or is it threaded on. Maybe set it up as is and take a few more pics. Keith might be right that it is an HOC objective. That is a shame.
Cheers,

The part with the objective screws on the tube and there is no dew shield extending beyond what you see.. I will try and get more pictures later.. Now all I have to do is figure out how to replace it!

If it were mine I would carefully clean and try it out. But that's me, I loved kaliedoscopes when they were popular in the 60's and this objective could provide some very stimulating views.

You can try http://www.astronomy-mall.com/astro.parts.outlet/ you never know what Don has hidden away. While you are hunting for a replacement build a mask and use the sweet spot in the center, you may have 50-60mm left there.....

Hey Ham Radio,
The Island Eyepiece and Telescope Ltd. 83mm x 1200mm objective on the following links should work. I purchased a 93mm x 1000mm of the same type for my 90mm Konus refractor and it works quite well. It is a Vixen-Spec achromat that should fit your scope. Hope this helps.

BTW Ham Radio,
The price of the 83mm x 1200mm objective is $159.95. Though it states 83mm in diameter, it should fit. They allow for the thickness of the retainer ring, which has a clear aperture inside diameter of 80mm in most cases. Therefore the retainer ring takes up the additional 3mm. The cell is not included though. Not a problem since you will be using the one you already have.
The objective on Island Eyepiece and Telescope Ltd. is listed as being research-grade. The 90mm lens I have is also listed the same and can be pushed to 227x power with good results! Now get that awesome scope back in business!

Sheldon Faworski, a member here, has 80mm/1200mm Carton objectives that will fix that right up. I don't give out people's email addresses, but he has a store listing here in our Classifieds http://www.cloudynights.com/classifieds/showcat.php?cat=500&ppuser=25634 and you can contact him through it.
Just so you know, me and him built me an 80mm/1200mm using the lens I referred to, and it is mega-sweet! You'll love it.

Hey Doug76,
That is a great suggestion. Sheldon Faworski should have crossed my mind as well as IE&T Ltd. I have purchased several items from him. Hope he has an objective Ham Radio could use. The Carlton lens are definitely well praised. If not, IE&T is an alternate; and they should have them in stock.

If civilization (such as it is) ever falls you can use that objective as a hide scraper and shaving razor.
