Dimmed Paddle, electrical issue
      #3346627 - 09/21/09 12:20 PM

I have a 12" LX200 GPS that has worked pretty reliably for the years I have owned it. Last use, the paddle was not as responsive as usual. During alignment, the telescope continued to slew past the target (RA motor) requiring shutdown. I replaced batteries but when turning the scope back on, the paddle immediately dimmed and did not boot. I tried two different power supplies using the 12v external power socket.

Has anyone experienced this or does anyone have suggestions as to the cause and the repair?

Had a similar issue with my lx90 keypad, turned out the cable was bad between the keypad and the control pad..
Replaced it with a longer one found on scopestuff and all is well..

I am having similar, electrical, hand controller issues with my 8" LX200 GPS. Bought two replacement cords for HC but not helping the problem. I will get a few minutes operation intermittently between failures. Contemplating removeing faceplate on the forkmount to have look at resetting connectors and some sort of cleaning.

I too would appreciate any suggestions. My scope is about 18 months old.

I agree, try a new cable FIRST before you open up the controller.

We have used Circuit Works Rubber Keypad repair kit from Chemtronics on 497 and Autostar II keypads with great long lasting results.

I tried to use a keypad repair kit last year on my Autostar handbox and it failed to work, The hand paddle buttons went from partially usable to totally unusable. I had repaired a TV remote control at the same time with the kit, and it worked fine. This showed me that the original AutoStar paddle that I had was just too old and worn out.

I ended up purchasing a new Autostar controller from OPT, and it works fine (rightly so as it was brand new).

Seeing the history of problems with the Autostar series of telescopes over a number of years, it seems that Meade could change the cable connectors to something a bit more durable. The phone style connectors they use now are not really engineered for use outdoors. If I had it my way the telescope would use aerospace grade Cannon plugs instead.

I remember on the Apollo 16 flight when John Young's feet caught on a ribbon cable that ran from the ALSEP central station to the heat flow experiment. The cable broke at the connector and was unrepairable.

With the advent of electronic Goto telescopes, proper performance requires that the hardware connectors work flawlessly, as there is no option to use the telescope manually without the electronics working. Replacing the connectors with better ones sounds like a good project for a cloudy night.

It is about time that everything goes wireless!
Components are small and cheap enough.
I dropped my landline phone and went strictly wireless.
Still have the DSL line but soon the planet will be blanketed with wireless DSL.
