My first Jupiter Last Night new
      #3342784 - 09/19/09 08:59 AM Attachment (26 downloads)

This is my first Jupiter taken last night. I'm used my ETX125 and an old QuickCam Communicate I had lying around. I modded it like I've seen others do- remove the lens and tape a 35mm film tube on it.

I'm just into my 2nd month with my scope. I was just amazed that the image onscreen is nothing like what I see at the eyepiece. Onscreen it was just a fuzzy white circle with just a hint of 2 grey bands. At the eyepiece, I get color; banding, I can see the GRS when it's there. All 4 moons are pinpoints. Watched one disappear last night.

I'm thinking my old QuickCam just does not have enough light sensitivity? I tried all of the combinations of settings I could to try and improve the onscreen image, but that was the best I could do.

Anyway, here's my first.

Forgot to say this was about 300 frames stacked with Registax then edited for bright, contrast and color.

The quickcam uses a CMOS sensor which is not as sensitive as CCDs, like in the ToUCam and Neximage.

Here's one I took recently with my modified quickcam 4000. The QC lens was removed, and I used a piece of 1.25" drain pipe PVC epoxied to the camera housing as a nosepiece.

I've also recently gotten a Celestron Neximage which I'm going to post a shootout between the two.

Thank you for your input. I've read that CMOS is noisier than CCD and I plan on getting a CCD webcam. I just had this one lying aound and thought I'd give it a whirl.

By the way, checked out your blog. Congrats on your giving up smoky treats. One of these days I'm gonna do the same.

You should. You'll have to clean your optics less often.

Well, I haven't smoked around the scope. I know the kind of residue it leaves and that's reserved for my lungs.

One o' the days.

Great blog site, Drksky!!!
I have a Celestron NexImage on order and am hoping to receive it before Oct 2. I'll be watching your blog site, eagerly awaiting the 'shootout' results of your imagers!!
