I viewed it with both my 80mm ED refractor and with my 8" dob last night (first night I had the dob on it). In the 80mm refractor, it looked just like a haze of dust. In the 8" dob as I zoomed in, it exploded into individual stars. Yes, you are exactly right, the 8" dob has enough light gather ability to show the brighter stars in M13 and many other globular clusters. Another easy one this time of year is M22 in Sagittarius. M92 also in Hercules is pretty good. Same with M15 in Pegasus. If you do see M92 and M15, they will be more condensed than M13 and M22.
