Total Lunar Eclipse Photo: Unknown Year/Date
      #3349822 - 09/22/09 07:05 PM

I took a series of slides of a total lunar eclipse in BC and I never documented which one it was. I can tell/remember some details of what time of year and day and some other information.

The eclipse started before moonrise here in Western Canada and it was nearly total by the time the moon cleared the mountains some 8 degrees above the horizon.

There is a bright object nearby. It is around 3 degrees away, below and to the right of the moon. I think it is Jupiter.

The time of year is July or August. They were taken in 1998 or prior.

Sorry, no scans as yet.

John,

After looking through my old S&T's from 1998 going backwards, it would appear that the eclipse in question
is the one which took place on the night of September 26, 1996. I know that the date doesn't match your July / August criteria, but that seems to be the most likely candidate.

The planet which was approximately 2.5 degrees from the moon that night was Saturn.

I completely agree with Vito. The total lunar eclipse of 1996 SEP 26 was the only one observable from Vancouver during 1994 through 1999. That day the partial eclipse began at 18:13 PDT, and the total eclipse lasted from 19:20 through 20:29, with the partial eclipse ending at 21:36. The Moon rose at 18:53 while in partial eclipse prior to becoming total. The sun set at 19:01. Indeed, that was Saturn to the lower right of the Moon. I hope you eventually share the pictures with us.
