With the moon 4 days past full phase I knew it would be late before it was up high enough in the sky to pick a surface target for sketching. But the sight of the moon rising out of the haze, fog and clouds in the east north eastern sky caused me to change plans immediately. I returned indoors to get my oil pastel Cray-Pas crayons. I don’t especially like to use them at scope side because I get them on the telescope and eyepieces and everything else I touch but they are the only color tools I have confidence using and this occasion called for color. I have not seen the moon this color in quite some time. I never have a clear view to the horizon from my home but the moon remained this color through the first half hour of the sketch and I was able to establish the colors early on in the sketch. I first spotted the moon when it was already 10 degrees above the horizon. The orange and yellow colors were striking to see at the eyepiece. Direct view of the moon without the scope was red-orange.
Sketching:
For this sketch I used: Black Canson paper 12”x 10”, assorted colors of oil pastel crayons (Cray-Pas). Telescope: 4.25 inch f/ 5.0 Dobsonian and 26mm eyepiece - 21x Date: 9-8-2009 3:28-4:35 UT Temperature: 20°C (68°F) Partly cloudy, hazy, foggy, 84% humidity Seeing: Pickering 4/5 Transparency: 1/5 - 2/5 Co longitude: 148° Lunation: 19.7 days Illumination: 80% Frank McCabe

Frank,
A beautiful lunar pastel sketch. I have also seen these colors over the Moon. You have done a great job rendering them. Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Frank,
A wonderful capture of the moon. The orange and yellow are very nice and reflect the colors I saw in the moon last week out west here with all of the smoke from the fires. Nicely done.

Carlos and Jay,
Thank you both for your kind words. Our atmosphere can have a powerful influence on the mood of the moon.

Frank,
A beautifully colorful Moon you have captured with your oil pastels! I love the way your Moon seems to glow in hues of yellow and orange. Looks like you had fun sketching this one. I certainly had fun viewing it!

Tom, Rich and Roland,
Thank you all. This was a very impromptu and impulsive sketch. That kind of behavior is a little out of character for me. I had to do some cleaning up afterwards. I did have fun and I knew this would make Roland smile.

It did, and what is nice about the technique, while it may not permit detail, it does permit a sense of depth. Your craters, with the greys, whites, and color, surely look like they are 3D.

Roland, Thanks for your comments. I have an old set of oil pastels from the 60's which I carved sharp for more detailed drawings. I know they are somewhere in my basement packed in a box. One of these days soon I'll look for them. I have never attempted a close crater drawing with them but as you know the moon can be colorful when rising and setting.

Kyle,
Thank you, it was more of an impulsive type sketch than what I usually draw. Great fun to try.

Beautiful aesthetic rendering of my favorite orb!
I especially like the way you blended orange and pink near the edges and around Tycho.
I hope to see more of this color work from you again soon. You say that you only have the Cray-Pas for color. I think you would enjoy trying dry color pastels. Warning though: You'll get hooked!

Mark,
Thank you for your comments and compliments and suggestion about using dry color pastels. I am not exactly ready yet to try them but I will. I think the oil pastels work a little better with white paper. I wasted a lot of time trying to cover the black grain in the paper. I rarely seem to catch the moon in the color added by our atmosphere from my location. The planets Mars, Jupiter and Saturn beg for color sketching. We miss your extraordinary sketches here.
