can you barlow a guider?
      #3350582 - 09/23/09 01:05 AM

Hi, I have an Orion 80ED guidescope and a DSI one mono as a guide camera. Can I use a barlow while guiding?

Thanks, Tom

Technically yes you can. But as the Star light passes through more glass, it is harder to get the nice crisp clean focus.

As a practical matter, I'm not sure it helps much. PHD gives sub-pixel guiding accuracy. I regularly image with my 2500mm 10" LX50 while guiding with my ED80 (not barlowed) - works quite well. Also, I find it hard enough to find guide stars as it is without reducing the field of view by 1/2!

Really, I just need a temp fix until I can come up with a extention tube so I can reach focus with my dsi, I was stuck in the field and had to use a diag to get focused, my 2in TV big barlow is just long enough but was not sure if it would work.

I tried this as well as a fix to needing a bit of extention, but couldn't get focus.

That said, as well as halving the field, it also increases the focal ratio. Add flexure into the mix and I don't think it's worth it.

I use a modified 50mm finder with a DSI Pro as a guide scope. Because the native FL is only about 170mm and the pixels in the DSI are kinda biggish, I've been using a 2x barlow. The focus is soft, but it seems to work well.

I had a cheap barlow that I used as an extension tube for a bit. I took out the lens and didn't slide the tube all the way in the focuser. It did the job, but you really need a proper extension tube.
