1895 - The Goerz began designing its first prismatic binoculars with Porro prism

All the binocular fans know the history of binoculars that the Porro prism, for the first time they have been applied in binoculars by Zeiss in 1894 (he tried Abbe previously but also the quality of optics did not allow him to have great results, so the project was aside), but few know that in the same year, in July 1895 also Carl Paul Goerz himself tried acquire the patent, for Germany, by Zeiss, but was denied by the company in Jena (see attached image from original Goerz book of 1911).

Then went to work on his project in July 1895 to prepare it for themselves. In particular Emil Hoegh (the physical optical of Goerz industry),designed a prismatic binoculars with the ocular with an apparent field of 40 ° (36 ° instead of the other competitor (Zeiss ?).

The project was completed October 15, 1896 and early production of prismatic binoculars Goerz Trieder (3x, 6x, 9x, 12x20) was started in 1897.

The patent Goerz of new ocular at 40 ° Emil Hoegh, dates back to 13 March 1897.

Although Zeiss-Abbe was the first, the Goerz had a great capacity to recover the gap, Even if not used the original patent Zeiss.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that the text in the message above is taken from page 32 of the original book that was published in 1911 Goerz in his first 25 anniversary.
Here attached the title of the work.

Note:
The book's original Goerz of 1911, in my possession that I bought at 180euro to Berlin in 2008.
I've scanned and translated with OCR from German into Italian.

Thank you!
The book is 100 pages, divided into 4 chapters, 1-The history of optics, particularly the German. 2-The first 25 years of Goerz 1886 to 1911 (year to year all the main products of success. 3 List of the 100 patents Goerz 1886-1911. 4 Wanderful 30 photographs of the Factory of Berlin.
There are many anecdotes in the history described German optics, in particular the relationship between Goerz and Zeiss (great respect).

To your second question on my binoculars .. I answer certainly.

The greatest satisfaction is restored (when necessary), even if I get some time was not perfect, I try to put them in as close to original quality.

Some are perfect! As new.
Such as Heli-Trieder 8x24 or 8x26 Armee Trieder with graduated scale for the artillery in 1917. The Zeiss 6x30 Silvamar etc ...

Bye

Thank you Bensi, this is interesting history. I love the photographs on your blog.

So, around 1910, Zeiss and Goerz were very close competitors. Would you say that the granting of the Porro Binocular patent to Zeiss is what made the difference, that Zeiss became a giant while Goerz died out?
Ron

Thanks for compliments on my blog!

No ... it was not the Zeiss but the 1WW to create serious problems for Goerz.
The Goerz was a gigantic company in 1917 has reached the maximum of its employees worldwide, 10,000 workers and employees.
The binoculars were only a small part of production Goerz, who began his fortune with the Camera ANGO (Goerz-Anschutz) who first
the world had a curtain shutter from 1 / 1000 sec.
He had many patents for photography, but to a certain extent, with the outbreak of the 1WW, he devoted much of its production to war materials, such as periscopes for the U-boot Prussians and rangefinders and binoculars from the trenches.

In short, dying in 1923, Carl Paul Goerz, including the crisis of post-war (which had no Zeiss), in 1926 became part of the giant Zeiss-Ikon (who became the owners of more than 100 patents Goerz and its offices and workforce ).

If there had been 1WW and the death of Goerz, perhaps it would rely on two
separate companies or even would have occurred otherwise (the Goerz, would buy the Zeiss .. but mine is only a hypothesis).

Bye

Goerz and Barr & Stroud - 1908 [Re: Bensi]
      #3350842 - 09/23/09 06:00 AM

Another news that perhaps not everyone knows ...
In 1908, the Goerz and Barr & Stroud had a technical collaboration and commercial.
In particular, for Germany at the time, the Barr & Stroud was distributed and represented by Goerz.
There was also a technical collaboration for the construction and supply of telemetry to the armies of the time.

Are reports taken from the book's original Goerz I have in my library.
